It was a feast to her conducted and celebrated by her chil dren: those -Oio were married in cluded their husbands and wives, but there were no other guests. There was a sumptous dinner, with special dish es, known to be among mother's favor ites; there were gifts; family matters were discussed with all possible free dom. ' Those who could riot be present sent letters to be read; in fact it was a dear oldfashioned family gathering. The head of the bouse was not forgot, ten, but was the recipient of a bottle of rare wine or some other delicacy. Back as fur as the days of "Queon Bess" this day was celebrated, as thd records shofl a recipe for "Simnel cukes," which were always served on this day.
