Mothers' Day Nears
Of late years the uatom of ap
pointing a certain Sunday as Mother's
Day has been adopted by most of the
protestent donominuationos. ana Jias
become quite popular, it is interesting
,to note in this connection, that in Eng
land for centuries, the fourth Sunday
in Lent, which comes this year tomor
row (April2) is known there as Moth
ering Sunday' We clip the following
Irom the Oregon Journal:
"Mothering" Sunday'
The firts Sunday in April brings a
day that I wish everyone would cele
brate regardless of creed or sex. It
is the fourth Sundtiy in Lent, P.nown by
those who remember old customs and
are strict churchmen as "Mothering"
Sunday. Modern . church calenders
name this only as mid. Lent; but in
! A 1 ! TT- 1 1 tL' J
uuya-Kuue uy in cngiuiiu mis any was
especially set apart to do honor to
one's mother. It was a feast to her
conducted and celebrated by her chil
dren: those -Oio were married in
cluded their husbands and wives, but
there were no other guests. There was
a sumptous dinner, with special dish
es, known to be among mother's favor
ites; there were gifts; family matters
were discussed with all possible free
dom. '
Those who could riot be present sent
letters to be read; in fact it was a
dear oldfashioned family gathering.
The head of the bouse was not forgot,
ten, but was the recipient of a bottle
of rare wine or some other delicacy.
Back as fur as the days of "Queon
Bess" this day was celebrated, as thd
records shofl a recipe for "Simnel
cukes," which were always served on
this day. They resembled a rich fruit
cake, with nuts in the icing, which
was made yellow with saffron. -Knights
