BOWLING GOSSIP All-Stars took another scalp into their trophy room last evening when the Ford team fell before the first named aggregation. It was a worthy victory, for the team rolled well ovr 2800 which, you know, is pretty husky bowling. Ed Houck, a La Granue bowler, came within two pins of making that very rare thing in bowling a perfect score when he, yesterday afternoon, put down a total of 298 pins. This breaks the alley record held for some time by Don Scott Mr. Houck'g one flaw came in the last frame. He put down 11 straight strikes and got eight pins on the last. Frits Lottes, one of the cleverest grapplers of amateur standing in this neck of the woods, will take on beginners in wrestling at stated intervals. The demonstrations - are in addition to regular gymnastics undertaken by the class Tuesday and Fridny evenings. Mr. Lottes , will also begin his wrestling demonstration noxi Tues day. , ' Commencing tonight, basketball games will come thick and fast in Eastern Oregon. The high school weeding out process bogins tonight. Skating, hockey and toboggan games and a half-dozen other winter sports fade into insignificto com pared to the fascination of skiing, which several amateurs are finding I out 'this month. - Tho snow-clad hills about La Grande afford the best op portunities in the world for tho fan. It is a game that requires nerve, cool ness and ability, and is punctuated with exhilarating Journeys into snow drifts. The sport is gaining new followers every day in La Grande. While skiing is grven much consid eration, just plain coasting gets the more attention. All the hills in the city at nil suited are in constant use, now especially that it beginB to dawn upon the ipeoplc that the snow is liable to disappear most any old time. In many instances coasting and trailing parties become social events, with in formal gatherings in homes after the big winter sport. The most popular course begins near the rock crusher and hits the west end of Adams, car rying the coasters to Cedar and even First street. 3 . February 9th a wrestling and box ing tournament will be presented by Y. M. C. A. members. There will be five events, tho wrestling under direction of Frits Lottes nnd the box ing under the generalshi- of C. D. Emnhiser. The funds accruing from this attraction will be npplied on the 'purchase of a horse for the gym floo, which is badly needed to round out the Q 05 new equipment already purchased. Floyd Payne, sensational University of Oregon two mile runner who is known in intercollegiate circles as the "Athena Jackrabbit," contemplates re-entering college in February after spending the first semester at his home in Athena. AUTOMOBILE NEWS. Total receipts xrom auto license moneys in this county were $2)111.60 of which deduction for expense is made in the sum of $419.88, leaving $1,691.62 to be refunded to the Union county Toad fund. Union ranked well up in the list. Those showing greater number of cars were Clackamas, Coos, Douglas, Jackson, Yamhill. The increase in horsepower of auto mobiles owned in Union county for 1915 is credited with being 108 per cent greater than the year before, a record in the state. As a matter of fact this figure i8 misleading. The year previous there I were scores of cars which were not supplied with licenses, while in 1915 the law was enforced and these same machines were rated at Salem as new cars. Nev ertheless, the great increase shown in spite of that fact came largely from the country points, rather than from the city. The secretary of state has just com pleted the annual apportionment to the counties of the moneys received from motor vehicle and chauffeur li censes for 1915. The total receipts amounted to $108,884.60. Of this amount $87,230.08 or 80 1-10 per cent of the total receipts, was re mitted to the counties for the benefit of the general road fund in proportion to the' amount of such receipts from each county; $8,836.38 was paid for license plates and chauffeur badges; $7,127.86 for clerical services;' $2, 617.10 for postage and forwarding Charges, $2,282.95 for printing blanks, forms, monthly lists required by law to be furnished County Clerks, etc.; $719.63 for stationery, and $67.50 for refunds. License plates and chauffeur badges for 1915 cost 8 1-10 per cent From the best information obtainable Oregon pays as little or less than any other state for its license plates these now costing but 10 cents each or 20 cents per pair. Contracts for license plates have never been allowed to go outside .the State and are at present being furnished by Portland firms. Clerical services amount. to 6 6-10 per cent of the receipts in-1915, which is 7-10 per cent below this item for 1914. m. I jt.
