ters around a roulette game in which
dad, in the role of a foxy grandpa,
! shows his two sons how to play the
ancient game. Incidentally dad
breaks the bank, cleans out a polished
scoundrel and runs off with the pret
tiest girl at the polite gambling party,
to which he hadn't been invited be
cause he was considered an old fogy.
"Father and the Boys" i3 a delight
ful comedy which will please the older
generation and tip the younger fellows
off to keep an eye on dad.
The advance ale of seats for the
comedy, "Don't Lie to Your Wife," on
Wednesday of next week, assures a
success and all the cast are working
diligently.
Mrs. Capt. Racket, the leading lady
is one of the most charming charac
ters imaginable. Her marriage to tha
Capt. is kept secret from his Uncle
Obadiah, a rather sporty old gentle
man, who suddenly pays them a visit.
The uncle picks the wrong woman as
Mrs. Racket and makes some remarks
with reference to her looks, which she
overhears, and her revenge on the old
man develops some comedy that is
hard to beat. She also discovers that
her husband has written a letter to
uncle and tilled it with his famous lies.

Use of Tortoise Shell.
The curious nrt of divination through
the medium ot tortoise shell Is very
populur throughout the Island klug
ilom, beliis used upon many occasions
to ascertain tho timeliness or possibil
ity of various projects. Tho impor
tance of this practice in the eyes of the
Japanese may be inferred from the
fact that the fields In which the sacred
rice for the coronation ceremony was
grown were selected through tortoise
shell divination.
The divination Is effected by first
worshiping a god called Uravanokami.
Thou a tortoise shell is tnken and
scraped Inside until quite thin nud tho
outside surface polished. In the shell
are several hollow squares in each of
which there Is a certain Blgu marked
in black ink. The whole is then baked
under great heat, causing cracks to ap
pear In the surfuco. Those cracks are
then studied In accordance with the
formulae In the divination book, the
result being a sort of code message
from the gods.
. This is not the earliest form of divin
ation known In Japan. Previously
there was a kind called Futomuul, In
which the shoulder blade of a stug was
used in place of a tortoise shell. Tho
tortolso shell method, which probably
came from China, was considered an
improvement and was probably adopt
ed because it was something new, for
at that time tho Japanese were seizing
upon all things foreign. Japanese

ness of finding out witches was well
established and accepted In courts of
law as highly proper.
In 1640 it Is recorded that the magis
trates of Newcastle, England, sent to
Scotland for an expert witch finder.
This gifted person proceeded to ehow
bis skill by quickly discovering fifteen
witches and securing their conviction.
One Matthew Hopkins was a cele
brated witch finder of that period.
It was easy to discover witches when
yon knew how. The suspected person
could be forced to weep and then de
tected by the well known fact that a
witch could shed only three tears and.
those from tho left eye, or sho could
be pricked with pins to discover the
spot li'.senslble to pain, which was a
sure sign of dealings with the devil.
That women were far more likely to
dnbblo In witchcraft than men was
conceded. The reason wan satisfacto
rily explained by a famous German
text book en witches published in the
fifteenth ce::;nr. It wan simply that
women wei o inherently wicked, where
as men naturally Inclined to goodness.
