HORSE BUYERS QUIT MARKET STOCKMEN DISAPPOINTED BY ACTION OF FRENCH AGENTS Joseph People Hear Lecture on Crea tion of World and Probable End. '.Joseph, Or., Feb. 22. Many people -were disappointed Thursday morning when the advance agents for the French horse buyers received word from headquarters that they were in the market for no more horses at the' present trme. It came as a thunderbolt out of a clear sky as the main buyers were expected in on the noon train from La Grande. The ad vance agents, Mr. Sweeney and Mr. ' Jesse did all ther could to help the norsemen out They paid the livery bills on the -horses they naa tagged for the buyers. - E. T. Luna of Athena has accepted a position as dry goods salesman in the B. & M. Supply company's de partment store. Mr. Luna's wife is not with him at present but will ar rive here next week some time. Homer Hayes has resigned his posi tion in the B. & M. Supply company's store and has taken a homestead on Snake river where he intends to en gage in the stock business. Mr. ir Hayes is an 0.' A. C, graduate and has worked in this store ever since he graduated and Unas made 'many friends in a business, way that will miss him in the store. v O. F. Stafford of Eugene delivered an interesting lecture to the people of Joseph Wednesday night on the subject of how this old world of our's was created and probably how it will end in the course of many more years, which no one knows : exactly. The theory that. the lecture was worked out on is very plausible and there is no doubt but what he convinced the audience that way. Mr. Stafford is connected with the extension depart ment of the University of , Oregon. This is the second man sent out by that institution that has visited our city during the last nine months. ' George Russell of Swamp creek was in town this week on business. Matt Isley ' and Charley Craven brought in some horses from the Di vide to sell to the horse buyers but were disappointed like a good many of our good people were. Theodore Schuler made a - flying visit to Enterprise this week. . - Elma Hunt lhas returned from a visit with her sisters. - She visited Mrs. Aubrey Smith of Union and Miss Laura Hunt at Haines where she is teaching school this winter. Tom Wells who was found dead in the Grande Ronde rooming house was well known in Joseph as he had sheared sheep in the country for many years. : Mr. and Mrs. Karl Akins of Imnaha were in town this week buying sup plies and farming machinery for their ranch at the Imnaha. University Agent Delivers Address "' ' Social Function Popular. ' Wallowa, Ore., Feb. 21. (Special.) Prof. O. E. Stafford, head of tho department of chemistry at the Uni versity of Oregon, delivered a lecture if the gymnasium, Monday evening. The subject he lectured upon . wps "Worlds in the making.'? He illus trated his theories at various times with stereoptican slides. There was quite a large crowd in attendance be side the high school students. The students took notes on the lecture, and then wrote the lecture up, and discussed it during the English class. These lectures are free, and are di rected by the University extension division. The masquerade ball given by the ladies of the Cathofiic church, in Morelock's hall, Monday evening, was well , attended. . The : dancing . com menced about 9:00 p. m., and continued until about 2:30. A large number and quite a number of characters were represented. Mrs. J. S. White won the prize for the best lady character, which was a silk handbag. . She rep resented a school girl. A. B. Hall, as a negro, won the prise for the best man character.- He received a safety razor,. and a mirror.-: Union Council Transaction. (Union Republican.) The city council met in adjourned session at the city hall Saturday even ing last. Present Councilman Davis, Wright, Wiglesworth and Jones, Rec order Terrall. The Finance committee : reported that the city had arranged to ex tend time of paying city bonds one year by increasing the interest two per cent, which it was decided to do after paying off two bonds of $1,000 each, leaving about $7,000 yet to pay of this issue of City Hall bonds . The matter of Treasurer's bond was 'referred to the Recorder. The matter of charging peddler's license was discussed, applying par tfcularly at this time to the operations of the Grand Union Tea Co. . It waa decided to call a mass meeting of the people of the city at the city hall Wednesday ; evening, February 24, for the purpose of con sidering the appointment of a com mittee to oversee the revision of the city charter, r The recorder was instructed to get t&gs for dog tax. MUs Irene Camp ben, who for several years has been the Latin teacher in the Baker high school, has accepted a position in the Jefferson high school at Portland and will leave the first of the week to take up her new work. She will be succeeded by Miss : Kate . Baker, who has been, one of the teachers in the English department. Mrs. Neil Bar bour, formerly Miss Lois Owen, Eng lish teacher last year, wtio is spend ing some time with her mother, Mrs. A. G. Owen, will finish, the term in Miss Baker's position. The departure of Miss Campbell from Baker will be deeply regretted by her many friends, but her ad vancement in her profession is a mer ited one and she will carry the best wishes of Baker people in her new position. O.-W. officials in Portland the blue prints and plans for the proposed ex hibit building at the depot for their approval. When the matter waj first taken up with the railroad authorities they made tentative agreement for the iue of a plot of ground in the I depot , parking, and it is not believed tfhat they will hold up the project, as those who were asked about the mat ter seemed greatly in favor of having the building and offered to do all they could to help it along.
