We say can' gerous . because once a person taught to constantly accept charity that person loses the desire to help - himself. He becomes a drone in many cases and lives under that fearful misundbrstanding ' that "the ' world owes, him a living." Our atention has been called many times of late to duplication of charity, that - is, several organizations have - contributed to the same case, each organization being unaware of the charity extended by the other. " ' For this reason we hold the be lief that Associated Charities should be organized in La Grande at once. . And that organization should be und er the direct supervision of the Neigh ; borhood club. We mention the Neigh bortiood club because of its capability . of handling the matter and for the 'further reason that no individual or organization, religious or 'otherwise, . would object to ' 'working with the , noble women of La Grande who. com prise Uis club, , . s For years each of the churches has I done fa volume.; of charitable Jwork !, during the .winter, months. Lodges .also have extended their, free will of - feringg outmdfe their , membership, and of late many individuals have . done quite a little in a charitable way. Constant duplication . in charity is going to- make, some drones, a thing ..which should be prevented by all means. For the human being who is taught to "lean on his neighbor" in v times .when foe could toelp himself ; i . ceases to be the active, alert Americ . an citizen that he should be. We have no disposition to minim -. in-rthe ;work done by any organiza- t(on along the line of charity. On tfhe other hand we cannot commend puch work too strongly. But at pres to ent we lack organization in La Grande. The work should have a . head and ; perfect system should prevail. No : cne In the city Viould go hungry, no . ' one should . need luel and clothing witout receiving it, but we positivey object to the making of store houses of charitable offerings as has been : done in some caBes. ' ; It seems to us that a solution of thin whole matter is very simple.
