GOSSIP AND ITS EFFECTS. ;
Sometimes a town in which every
body knows everybody else, envelopes
a mania for gossip. It is needless
to remark that many topics for con
versation have little or no foundation
in fact, and by frequent repetition
take on details that exist only in the
imagination. But the result of this
loose talk is frequently beyond re
pair. . It is easy to tell a story to
some interested friend and have that
same friend go. to a neighbor and re
peat the. story with-a few changes
and additions. ' By the time the story
has made the rounds, is it no longer j
recognizable. Ih ' tfris connection j
it might be well to remember the
story that is related to the lives of
the saints concerning the evil results
of tale bearing,, y0 j .;".''
; It is related that .a certain woman
spread a story about-a saintly man,
which had no foundation in fact, and
which greatly leyedhe saint and
fairly ruined his good name. In due
time this evil woman - went to her fath
er confessor to whom 'she confessed,
the sin. He imposed, upon her the pen
alty of going to the saint and asking
his forgiveness. Inaddition Bhe was re
quired to go to all the persons ' to
whom she had .related the story and
tell them it was false. When she
approached the saintly man she found
him on his death bed. Forgiveness
was asked and given. But to impress
upon her mind the enormity of her
offense, he drew from under his head
a feather pillow, and bade her take
i: to the church tower and scatter the
feathers to the wind. This she did.
Upon her return she informed him
of her compliance with his bequest
He then asked her to go and gather
all of the feathers that had been
scattered. "But," she said, "That is
Impossible." Thereupon the saint
told her that is was equally impossible
for her to repair the wrong she had
done to his good name.
First impressions upon the mind
are the most lasting. For this rea
son any denial of a story never has
the same effct to efface from the
memory the evil done as the first
telling of it. A gossipy person is a
bane to any community. Needless
pain is created, reputations are un
made in the twinkling of an eye, and
all to no purpose. It shows a lack of
charity. The man or woman who
really has committed some offense in
a moment of reckless thoughtlessness
needs not the scorning hand of some
one who nurses the secret, but a bit
of good counsel. Whom does it bene
fit? Whoso fortune is increased?
Whose mind is made better? It is
bad enough to repeat the faults that
really exist, but to deliberately and
carelessly add to some one's iniquity,
is worse.
Experience has woven 'into the trial
lated something is not on the witness
stand, is not under oath, is not sub
ject to cross examination, arid should,
therefore, not be allowed to prejudice
a man's case by his exaggerated as
sertions. This is the experience of
many centuries and all American and
English courts adhere to the rule
with a great deal of religious tenac
ity. If a man is seen wabbling it is
not a. sure sign that he is drunk. If
he is seen in a saloon it is not a sure
sign that heas taken a drink, and
no court would allow the evidence to
convict a man merely ' on appear
ances.
. A rule every man or woman could
adopt with great benefit would be the
one to tell nothing about which they
are not certain,' and when they are
certain, to keep it to themselves, or
tell it to the authorities charged with
the duty to look into things that are
vicious or immoral.

Notice is hereby given that on the
22nd day of February, 1914, that I
have taken up the following described
live stock: 1 white gelding, about
ten years old, blotch brand on left
stifle, " left ear split, weight about
1050 pounds; one brown mare, about
three years old, no visible brand,
weight about 800 pounds., which ani
mals are now held in the pound of the
City of La Grande, Oregon, according
to ordinance'No. 4, Series 1894. ,
The owner of said animals may re
claim the same by paying the sura of
$1.00 each, and the expenses of their
keep within ten days from date of
this notice. If not reclaimed, they
will be advertised and sold to the
highest bidder for cash, according to
the ordinance of said city.!
