1 7 JS fcBANDE EVENING OBSERVES. P AfiR TWO SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 19H JSC EVERYBODY URGEDTOATTEND SOME CHURCH TOMORROW, ment atsocir tho public Telep' .tion at 7:00 p. m. To all ar cordially invited. C. J. Black, Bishop. a Main 754. Unlets signs fail, scores of men and women too will grace some church in La Grande tomorrow who previously have not been church-going people. Tomorrow is "go-lo church" day, such as Chicago and all . the other big cities have had such success with. It has been clearly es tablished that the movement is not for any one church but for all churches and largely because of us unsectar han features it has been a success. Everything points to a banner atten dance in the churches of La Grande tomorrow. "Attend some church n the slogan, and that it will largely folowed out, is apparent. The movement, its purpose and iU ultimate ends ve explained tersely in an interview today with a La Grande i.iw idual Vho has the movement close at heart and who has seen it applied in other cities. He said: "The movement for a "Go-to-Church Sunday" is one which has sud denly sprung into popularity, and Has become Tiaiion-wide in its observance. "Why such a day, or such an obser vance? 1. Because the church of Christ, old as Christianity and divine in its origin, is appointed by God to meet the deepest needs of the soul, by hold ing tip Christ iman is not a mere an-, imal to be fed and clothed and kept contentedly within the narrow sphere of things temporal, material, earthly! Man was made in God's image ,and he needs God and cannot attain to this highest destiny apart from God come to church there to hear about God! ' j 2. But the church is essential to the welfare and prosperity of any community the maintenance of S high moral standard in any commun ity in absolutely out of the question, without the help of the church. Leg islation, education, police supervision, social service everyone of them mighty factors of a true civilization ,need the presence and power of the j church of God. to crystalizc and ren der permanent the resuHjfc,, at which they aim. If you believe therefore in the highest civilization, give the church your presence and help in the interests of a better and greater La Grande! 3. The church exists to bring com fort and help to distressed and suffer ing hearts; to point the way out of unrest and sin, into rest and peace, to hold up Jesus as the only, and all sufllricnt Savious of a perishing world. "Come to church to hear of Him, and hearing, to be inspired to heroic endeavor along with others in doing the one supreme duty for which Christ ' founded and annointed the church, viz: to spread abroad the saving knowledge of Jesus in all the world!" Another La Grande man who has given the subject much thought, said: "In answer to the direct question, "Why Should I go to Church" I would answer there are three impor tant reasons. The first is yourself, the second your family, and the third the community in which you live. All other reasons may be grouped around these. By tho most improved methods of culture and training of the mind and body you can at best produce as .n result merely an ex quisite animal. To produce a well developed human being you must train and develope the moral and spir itual natures as well, for these are the distinguishing qualities between man and the lower animals." I FIRST M. E. CHURCH. (Corner 4th and Spring.) Sabbath school 9:45 a. m., Dr. LENTEN PASTORAL DEALS WITH) SUBJECT OF NEGLECT OF CHURCH on no other body or soci-ty. What other body can impart such' assur ance of salvation? What other body is commissioned to preach the Gos. pel and admit believers into the kindgom of God? What other body can erect the altar of the Lord, on which is offered the great Christian memorial of that one true, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satis faction, once and for ever offered up on Calvary, for the sins of the whole world? What other officers save those of the Church, have authority, to pronounce the absolving word in the person of Christ? There are three important particu lars, concerning the Church which are necessary to keep ever in mind: 1. The Church is the sphere of grace. Through the Church, . Christ is carrying on His work of salvation. It is the .scene as it were, of His prom ised action upon the souls of men, as (Continued on Page Six.) Neglect of the church is the sub ject matter of the annual lentcn pas toral sent out to parishioners of St. Peter's Episcopal church in this city. Rev. Upton H. Gibbs, the rec tor, has just issued his pastoral, set ting forth, in addition the special services for Lenten season. The pas toral reads: It is only too noticeable, that there is a sad neglect of the Church, by those who are her members. They ne glect her services, her admonitions, her sacraments. Their regular atten dance at her worship, is fitful and most irregular. They voluntarily ex communicate themselves, by forsak ing her altars. And they do this, without any apparent qualms of con science or perception of the irrepar able loss to themselves. This is due, partly to ignorance, as to what the Church is, and the function the church discharges in the scheme of salvation. I intend therefore, to call to your attention, certain points about the church, as declared in Holy Scripture. The church is described therein, as "The Body of Christ," indicating the most vital and intimate union with Him. As husband and wife are one flesh, so Christ and the Church are one body. The members of the Church, acocrding to St. Paul, are members of Christ's body, His flesh and His bones. So, as Christ is the mediator between God and man, the Church mediates between Christ and man. Her ministers are ambassadors of Christ, who spfeak and act for Him. Her fonts contain the water for the washing of regeneration, which flows from His pierced side. Her altars are His thrones and the Holy Tables, from which is distributed the spirit ual and life giving food of His Body and Blood, by which our bodies and souls are nourished and preserved to everlastinsr life. At the hnnds of her chief ministers the sevenfold gift of inn nn v .snirir la rvaiuui nnw j -(-- - .u . ... i v . . n niiu vile voice of her priesthood has author- j ity to declare and pronounce to peni-1 tents, the absolution and remission of j their sins. From this, it will he seen. tW tVio Church is invested with tremendous J powers and faculties, which io salvation, and which are conferred GOOD NEWS FOR ANYONE WHO MAY WISH TO GET A HOME Here Are Three Offers: No. 1 On 1st street between Adaans and Jefferson Avenues.
