Tonight parents and teachers will meet for a most praiseworthy pur pose. Money making seems to have had its' Inning and the best of God's creatures, the child, is to be the sub ject of earnest discussion.- The child ' .... which has many times been compel! ed to take second place or no place at all; which has been relegated to the rear while eager men and women fol ".' lowed the phantom of wealth and all .- of 'its devitalizing allurements, the . child which is really all there is to i the game of life, is now receiving the " Irt iny attentions it deserves. The poetry and sentiment of life, which really makes life worth living, is to have a new birth, and this is to come through an appeal for perfection in children; The criminal practice of childless homes is to receive a body blow, not by holding up to thoughtless, heart less men and women a mirror in . which .they might behold the enor m'ty of their crime against nature - and a divine law, but through ah- ap- . peal to fundamental- instincts "-- in . them; .through an appeal to their . sense' of the beautiful and to justice. And why should this appeal not be - madeT 7 - ''""" ' "What is sweeter than a curly headr ed, clear-eyed smiling baby? Poets have sung their sweetest songs in its praise and artists have caught . the guileless, innocent look and made it the dream of mothers. Dimple cheeked, rosy lipped, Bmiling and cooing it -has become at once 'the subject of bare and solicitude of the 'state', and the foundation of the union. Like the rosebud within whose tinted petals repose the future flower, exquisite in its formation and varied in Its blushing hues, so too, this little human rosebud embodies all of the beauties and possibilities of noble manhood or modest woman , - hood. " Protected and' shielded,-fondled, and nurtured by a fond mother's love, it is like the tiny flowerbud, swelling to its full growth bymorn ing dews, and thp soft caressing rays ot a -spiring sun. But if is infinitely morc; Its little mind and soul sparks from the divine fire from .which it sprang, illumine its countenance and caufee It oto , breathe and express conscious life. To the enraptured e mothes it is the book" of meditation! in which she reads the message of an ollwi.se Creator, His great and un surpHssing love for man and the guagu of His. power. .To her it is a counterpart of life, a mirror in which she contemplates her own image re newed and beautified, and without tfi scaring scams of trial and VrTy, To her he is the fruit of tfiat inti mate bond ordained by man's Master, the originul designer and maker. Just as God made man and was pleased to behold the product of his own handicraft so did He ordain that man should create and rejoice in his offspring. What hardened heart of woman can behold the picture of a mother fondling and caressing her firstbori' and not feel that she has missed the great and ennobling object of her creation? What lonely bachelor can observe from a point of vantage the careless fumbling of a dimpled little hand, on its mother's breast, as it lies in her arms falling asleep, with out feeling that his life is empty and void? What forgetful parent, dead to all sense of duty does not look into the questioning eye of his or her darling daughter or son and there read more than all. books con tain? Who asks for the reason of the daily' and arduous toil of a father with calloused bands and bent should ers, or the nightly vigils of a care-, worn mother at the bedside of a darl ing babe, whose little spark of life is threatened with extinction? What makes heroes when the elements leave their bounds or man is lost to all sense of shame and duty? What makes man a man or woman a super ior being but the touch of a chubby, warm, baby-hand, a sparkling eye and an infant smile without subter fuge, telling a story all its own with out 'words? And the first cause of this tender being, so little understood, so .ill de fined, so much ignored. The prepar ation for its birth so scant, so block ed and thwarteed by wilful, ignorant violation of nature's just laws. The sins that mar its beauty and per fection by desecration of its embryo cradle, how much paraded, how shamelessly vaunted before a vulgar eye. It has been truly said that virtue U its own reward, so irees onng forth fruit according to their kind Must not then the perfect shlld per fect in body and soul, be the produ.-t of right living by both man and woman? witnout question.' rrutn is truth, immutable and unchanged able as God, and to produce "human beings' beautiful and perfect, men arid women must lead, perfect : .lives. Twas ever so and will always be sp. Strife for money alone, for hollow honors and TulgBT display, bear their- own reward and this reward is the main spring of grief and sorrow untold.
