Violinist Is Genius Reader and Lau der Impersonation Good. . With a dash and "Pep" born of confidence and experience, the O. A. C. glee club performed for an admiring audiance of considerable size at the Sherry theatre last evening perform-! ed as a unit, as individuals, and in twos and threes. Meritorious was the performance, too, and the club personified the press agent promises that the club is better than it has ever been. It is more evenly balanc ed, better in the ensembles, bette. in stunts. L. Ross Johnson, the noted tenor, is the first individual performer on the piogram, and is good, though much is expected of him as he is a musician by profession. George Ran dolf Thomas, on the other hand, is a student with singing as a side line, and it is quite a line with him, too. Tis "The Clang of the Hammer," by Bonheur, was one of the best rendered numbers. The club has a few clas sics, but throws in ' sufficient light stuff to make their program popular. Encores were invariably popular airs, parodies and ditties that popularized the club immensely. In fact encores were usually better than program numbers. Skipton a Genius. Nothing more or less can be said of Laurence Skipton, the club violin ist, than that he is a genius. Young, inexperienced, a mere boy in fact, he produces tones that are perfect, has a technique that is far above the av erage, and has before him a very bright future. Wieniawski's Second Mazurka was his opening number, but it was marred by a group of giddy, people in front rows that should have been summarily removed. -Skipton stopped in the middle of his number and then proceeded. The noise con tinued and the musician again stop ped and requested silence. From then on he settled down to as fine ren dition of violin music as La Grande has heard in years. He was called out three times, and came back with something better, each time a re markable feat in itself. The stunt program was short and snappy. The trials of a "Fussess" is a pantimoine which the club puts on in very creditable shape. ' The idea is original and novel. Joy W. Scud der has a beautiful reading voice and is polished in his business. . He was( required to "come back and he added to his versatility by giving a charac ter reading. Fun and. good music, by the way is cast into the program by the Royal Troubadours, a gang of wandering bards. ' The program is brought to a close with a piece of real classic impersonation. Henry Rus sell, a student in the club, does the famous Scotch comedian, Harry Lau der stunts and does them remarkably well ' His voice is perfect, his broad smile soothing, his .looks good, his physique truly Robert Bruce, and his dialect refreshing. Lauder is re ported to have been offered a flatter ing sum to take his 'act on the vaude ville circuit, and if he does he will have something far superior to offer than the vaudeville Lauders than one sees now days'." It is the Russol.s, the Scudders, the Skiptons, the Thomases and the Johnsons of the O. A. C. glee club that round out and make well nigh perfect a program of classics, college songs parodies and comic stuff. The club as a whole is median-' ical excellent, good from a standpoint of voices, well supplied with crisp stunts, and therefor a good attraction to send on the road. The newly organized city . league has formed with four teams in the ; field, the schedule has been drawn, and will run from February 19 to March 27, each, team meeting the others three t imes. The captains ( of the teams are Crowe, Willinms. ; Scott and Patton, and the best of the La Grande bowlers will be seen in the line-ups. The boys have their minds on the big tournament in Portland, and it is more than likely that the six or ten leading bowlers in the league will enjoy a trip to the big congress in the rose city in April. A fine boost has been given the La Grande bowlers by their team mate, Poe Caylor, in Los Angeles, who says that he has. not -seen any wonderful ' bowlers down there and that several of the La Granders can more than hold their own with the bowlers of that city. The first game of the local league will be Thursday night, when Crowe's team will meet Patton's team. A Strong Endorsement. ' W. H.
