School will start at Smiths mountain
August 25, with Mrs. E. May Britton
as teacher. There will be seven months
term this winter. , :
; Scott Brothers commenced hauling
the' lumber to Minam from which place
it will be shipped to out side points.
They have nine teams hauling at pres

John Fisher returned home this
week from Pine Grove, where he had
been building and completing a cement
foundation for the three thousand dol
lar residence that Chas. Wyatt is hav
ing built on his farm near Pine Grove.
The Wise Brothers of Smith's moun
)tain are stationed at Minam this
week, as they have the job of loading
the lumber in cars for Scott Brothers
John Riggle and his son, Donald,
are helping John McCullock to bale
hay on the Dick Ustick place in How
ard meadows.
Wallace Spencer, wife and family
and family and several friends came
up to Palmers telephone station last
week from La Grande in their auto and
stayed several days huckleberrying.
Alva Victor and Pete Young depart
ed last week for Lewiston, Idaho,
where they expect to remain for some
time. . ,
Mr. Achert, the mill man of Minam,
spent Sunday with his family at that
place. Mr. Achert has been employ
ed in the Grande Ronde valley for sev
eral weeks. '
; Chas. Miller and Ralph Foller, of
La Grande were up on Smith mountain
for several days' outing last week and
also visiting at the home of John Fish
er. '
Miss Lilly Riggle returned home last
week from Lower valley, where 'Bhe
had been staying several days with
