WENAHA LUMBER COMPANY Washington, D. C Aug. 18. Near ly 9,000 lOQ-acre farm homes will be drawn by the "lucky ones" as the re suit of the throwing open of 1,345,000 acres of land upon the Ft. Peck In dian reservation in northeastern Mon tana next month. This is the last great land drawing Uncle .Sam has to offer his people and one of the great est in the history tt government land openings in point of fertility. Govern ment agricultural experts estimate that when this vast stretch of virgin soil Is tilled it will add about 25,000,- 000 bushels of grain annually to the production of the United States enough to feed an entire nation. The interior department is making extensive preparations to rush a big corps of clerks to Glasgow, Havre and Great Falls, Mont., which are to be the registration points. These land offices will be open September 1 next and the work of filing for this land will then begin. The people will have a chance to continue filing until Sep tember 20. ' The vastness of the area opened to white settlement is expected to make this one of the most alluring land op enings ever presented to the 'people inasmuch as their opportunity of get ting something in the drawing will be much better than in any previous land opening. For instance when the Coeur d'Alene, Flathead and Spokane land drawings were held last year a total of 90,000 people filed and drew for the lands in those three Indian reser vations, the total area to which was. about one-fourth of the area to be opened upon the Ft. Peck reservation. Government officials do not think that more than 75,000 people will file for the Ft Peck land. Hence the chances of drawing a quarter sectionMn the Ft Peck reservation "lottery" ' are about four times as good as they have been ; in previous government land drawings'. The actual value of this land is said by government agricul tural experts to average about $25 an acre. However, the government's ap- praisaT-for its opening to. white settle ment is only from $2.50 to $7 per acre, thus making real prizes for those who draw this land. The drawing will take place in this way.'- The names of all who file for land will be placed in a big box and the envelopes drawn out one by one and numbered, until enough envelopes are taken from the box to correspond with the number of quarter sections HvailabIe8,40G. Those getting the early numbers will of course get first pick of (he land, in rotation, accord ins -to the numbers drawn. Then actual settlement of the land will be gin May 1, 1914.' Settlement, is the same as under the homestead law, exriont .that the appraised- valuation must be paid from $2.50 to $7 per acre, at these terms: One-fifth of the total down at time of entry and the rest in five annual payments. ' The settler, however, has the option of tak ing advantage of the new three-year homestead law by paying for his land at the end of three years and thus proving up on it : This gives the man of small means a chance for his 'white alley." Half a dozen modern town-sites al ready have been located by the gov ernment at points along the main transcontinental line of the Great Northern railway which runs through the Ft. The structure will be substantially fireproof. ' It will be er ected on a lot to be chosen from sev eral that are available. The play house will be open for the county fair, the first week in October. . The backers of the new undertak ng started out by buying Thomas Wright's moving picture show now in the Enterprise House Furnishing company building. This purchase was made last Saturday, the new owners taking possession at once. They will continue to run this place until their new biulding is ready for occupancy, then will sell the equipmentt now here, or will send it to some other town. : - JVv ' . .. .. Those interested in the business are F. W. Rader, of Enterprise and J. D. Cline and R. M. Miller of Chehalis, Wash., with whom some Seattle men are associated. They will incorpor ate, probably under the name of the Be!l Theatre company. D. M. Cun ningham is manager and will remain in that capacity. Continuous performances will be given six nights in a week, and Sat urday afternoons. While moving pic tures will remain a prominent feat ure of the establishment, vaudeville acts are expected to be provided reg ularly. There will be an ample stage, with room to accommodate any of the - traveling companies that may wish to show here. The house is to seat 300 persons. .
