For several years past the Colo rado potato beetle has been known to occur in the Nez Perce country in Ida ho, the only locality in which it was known west of the Rocky mountains. During 1911 and '12 some few were reported in different sections of the Palouse country. This year they are found quite generally in most all parts of the Inland Empire.- In some gar. dens there are thousands of them. ' In those states where the potato. beetle has' gained a stronghold it is necessary for the grower to spray at least a couple of times each season !'in order to save his crop. Should the i beetle gets a foothold it will be neces sary to do it here, thus incurring ad ditional expense in raising potatoes in this part of the count rj1. The time to kill them , is NOW before they change into adult beetles with wings to carry themselves , from field to field. There are two equally effective remedies against this pest. One can snray the vines thoroughly with either arsenate of lead, one pound to 35 gal lons of water, or with Paris green, 1 ! pound to 75 gallons of water. Both are quite effective and if properly ap-j plied the beetles eating of either should be dead inside of 24 hours.
