THE OBSERVER BRUCE DENNIS, Editor and Owner Entered fn the port-off ic at La Grande, Oregon, as second clan i matter. . : j KNEW IT WAS COMING. , At last Portland is face to fae with the soap-box orator, and to the cred it of Mayor AJbee bo it Ik said, he in handling the situation properly by re fusing to let inflammatory oratory flow in the Mate' metropolis. Strange a it may scc-rn, nearly the entire Mate knew the climax vrau com ing1 long before Portlanderg teemed to realize it. Almost two year ago it was apparent the red flag would be hoiMed in Portland onle ome firm ttepK were taken to stop the blear-eyed agitator who was then and ha ever ince been, a nightly visitor on the principal thoroughfares cf that city preaching treason and c!a hatred. Free fcpeech and inflammatory j ipeech are two entirely different things. Portland hesitated for fear the' free speech bugbear would be raised and her hesitation ha been expensive j in more way than one. The climax came Tuesday evening when the Burns crowd of agitori. (not socialists) mounted soap boxes at S:xth and Washington streets and began defaming Governor West, Sher iff Word and Mayor Albee. Many of us do not admire Governor Wext in all that he does, but he is governor of this great state and it entitled to respect even though hi! some kind of a boss that will Dut us own acts are frequently foolish 'and 'all to work and keep us at work? Are we going to inscribe the word "fail ure" on our free and enlightened meth od of government? The recall is for extreme cases, and in such it should be used. But it is no toy; it is not a plaything. We believe it would be a good idea to have an experience meeting in la weeds grow where weeds should not story in the press dispatches aDd it is grow, etc. But in La Grande so far a story that few members of the Man there is not even as suitable a reason, j asociation desire to hear When you get down to real com- j mon sense reasoning, what has gone It look3 ag th h G rd wrong m mis oiu worm nr-1 way ? He did absolutely right and it is a matter of regret that no mayor of Portland in the past had the courage to do what was done Tuesday evening. WHY RECALL FITZGERALD? Now the air is full of a recall on Councilman Fitzgerald. But, why? Mr. Fitzgerald has done nothing to justify a recall. There is no evidence to show that he uses the word "can't" or that he extricates pieces ef Jim Russell's or Fred Bock's meat from his molars with a lead pencil. We thought "Fitz" was behaving very well; that he was working first rate, barring an occasional grouch he has at the Observer, all of which counts for nothing so long as he hit the ball in municipal matters. There is as much cause fcr recall ing Councilman Fitzgerald as there i for the recalling of Mayor Hall, and there is no cause for either. But, if in the opinion of the sov ereign squatter, whose disposition is paramount in such matters, there must be a series of recalls probably "Fitz' will not object to joining in i. race. Over in Walla Walla they are try ing to recall their commissioners on the ground that the municipal ceme How Save Money for a Little Outing. "The streets," aid a Chautauqua speaker at Gladstone this week, are not for ladies in hobble skirts neith er are they for old men." He did not include the tight fitting skirt which has the hobbled garment bested and laid in the wardrobe. A contest between towns and cities of Oregon seems to be on, and the question at stake is among the ladies namely which city can produce the lady who can wear the tightest skirt. And if you will notice, no don't notice it isn't nice. The best recall that could be given La Grande would be a recall of some of the money expended in years past when inefficiency marked the investment. Grande Moling Co., is printed on each J sack.
