the soap-box orator, and to the cred
it of Mayor AJbee bo it Ik said, he in
handling the situation properly by re
fusing to let inflammatory oratory
flow in the Mate' metropolis.
Strange a it may scc-rn, nearly the
entire Mate knew the climax vrau com
ing1 long before Portlanderg teemed
to realize it. Almost two year ago
it was apparent the red flag would

The climax came Tuesday evening
when the Burns crowd of agitori.

at S:xth and Washington streets and
began defaming Governor West, Sher
iff Word and Mayor Albee.
Many of us do not admire Governor
Wext in all that he does, but he is
governor of this great state and it
entitled to respect even though hi! some kind of a boss that will Dut us

The recall is for extreme cases, and
in such it should be used. But it is no

Now the air is full of a recall on
Councilman Fitzgerald.
But, why?
Mr. Fitzgerald has done nothing to
justify a recall. There is no evidence
to show that he uses the word "can't"
or that he extricates pieces ef Jim
Russell's or Fred Bock's meat from
his molars with a lead pencil.
We thought "Fitz" was behaving
very well; that he was working first
rate, barring an occasional grouch
he has at the Observer, all of
which counts for nothing so long as
he hit the ball in municipal matters.
There is as much cause fcr recall
ing Councilman Fitzgerald as there
i for the recalling of Mayor Hall, and
there is no cause for either.
But, if in the opinion of the sov
ereign squatter, whose disposition is
paramount in such matters, there must
be a series of recalls probably "Fitz'
