Little Known of Man Except His Name
' Is Sam Vice. "

While attempting to - board east
bound freight train No. 24 in the 0 -W.
R. 4 N. yards just before 1 o'clock
this afternoon a man supposed to be
a laborer who has been working on
the Judd Rogers place near the branch
hospital, fell beneath the wheels and
was ground to death. Late this after
noon it was , ascertained by .., Officer
Alex Manning that the name of the
dead man is Sam Vice and that he in
tended going to La Grande to look
for work. No trace of relatives has
been secured but friends believe his
home was in Tennessee. V j
The body was not discovered until
after almost the entire train had pass
ed over it, and it was horribly muti
lated. Both arms and both legs were
severed and the . trunk had' been' cut
completely in two at the waist. Except
the arms, the upper part of the body
and the head had not ..been even
scratched. Death was almost instan
taneous. ' . , ' ; .'
" Freight train No. 24, Conductor Ma
honey and Engineer Hutchison, had
been switching, in the yards during
the noon hour and at 12:45 started to
pull out of the station. While switch
ing the engineer had noticed a man
sitting on the steps of the motor car
about 200 yards east of Main street,
but nobody has been found who was an
eye witness to the accident. It is gen
erally supposed that he swung in be
tween two of the cars and his hand
hold sliping, had fallen to the track.
The first known" of the tragedy was
when the ' conductor and brakeman.
seated on the back end of the caboose
observed the mangled body on the
track as their car passed the spot.
! The body was removed to the freight
depot and, though the man was un
conscious ,life remained in the body for
fully :ten minutes, evidenced by gasp
ing.
Coroner Garfield had the body re
moved to the Baker morgue where a
search of the clothing failed to re
veal any clew to his identity. An O.
W. R. & N. guide, a copy of the Boise
Capital News and the East Oregonian
with some cigarette papers comprised
the contents.
A number of people upon viewing
the remains identified the deceased as
a man who had been working for Judd
Rogers." No one seemed sure of his
name, one man stating he believed it
to be Wise, while others declared they
had heard him called Sam, Jack and
Slim. ' He was a young man, smooth
shaven, thin faced and about six feet
tall.- lie was wearing a blue jumper
at the time of the accident.
Coroner Garfield is this afternoon
trying to get in communication with
Mr. Rogers. An inquest will probably
be held tomorrow. .

proposed universal traffic rules re
forms which will be sent to every city
in the country. The rules are expected
