Youths Steal Beer Keg.
Huntington, Ore., May V. Satur
day, several young men, a majority
of whom were minora, were arrested
for stealing a keg of beer, drinking
it and creating a disturbance. The
beer belonged to a shipment for. Jus
tice of the Peace Woods. -All were
fined $5 and costs in the local court
Justice Woods . refused to prosecute ,
for stealing the beer and the charge
preferred was , of disorderly conduct
Almost without exception they were
employes of the railroad freight of
fice and yards. ' Assistant Superin
tenden Buckley of La Grande came
Saturday to investigate. :
Militants Foster Cruelties.
Paris, May 7, "If they should put
my mother to death; if they should
put any suffragette to death;-if they
should put us to the torture; what
ever they may do, the cause will go
right on and votes for women become
more than ever imperative." - Miss
Christabel Pankhurst, daughter of
Mrs. Emmaline Pankhurst, the Eng
lish .suffragette leader, made this
statement in her apartment, 9 Rue
Roy, where she has made her home
since her escape from England at
the time her mother and sister, Syl
via; were put in prison. ; Miss Pank
hurst is not an exile from England
because she fears the British jail, but
following a conference with her sis
ter arid mother, it was deemed more
advantageous to .the cause for at
least one member of the family to
be safe from molestation from the
police. 'V. :'":'v'
"The imprisonment of my mother
and her collapse after being tortured
with forceful feeding," said Miss
Pankhurst, "but adds to the glory of
our fight. All the harm they do us
but serves to strengthen the , cause.
And therein lies the real reason for
our 'hunger strikes.'When. a .suffra
gettes is arrested she refuses to eat.
in this manner protesting against the
right which the law gives men and
refuses to women. Since we are for
bidden the right to vote, we do not
recognize the law and object to know
ing only ' its effect. The scandal
would be enormous were one' of us
to die in prison. Sympathy would be
on our side; our cause would benefit
through protestations which would
surely follow. The government knows
this and releases us when we grow
weak from hunger. ;

was banished. This is a compliment.
Napoleon was sent to St. Helena be
cause he was feared. , It would be
the , same with us. But St. Helena
would not hold us; we are too many,
and we are growing in numbers daily.
Now they are urging the 'lynch law'
for us. They are provoking crowds
of toughs to attack us. Let them!
We will win in spite of violence and
perhaps because of it. , It is a pitiful
spectacle, this process of exciting the
rabble against us, and if some of us
should be killed, the outrage would
help, not hinder. And our onward
rush would not for an instant be
checked. Of course, we are charged
with acting in un-Iady-like ways. Our
only answer to this is that Joan of
Arc was a girl. Therefore let no one
be dumfounded when we follow the
advice given us by Sir Henry Camp
bell annermann. When a delegation
of which I was a member, asked Sir
Henry what we ought to do to obtain
votes for women, he said: "Go and
pester the people.' .
"Yes, we are going to get the vote.
We are certain of that. And in the
meantime our activity is benefitting
the rause outside of England. When
the Norwegian statesmen discussed
ths? question of woman suffrage, they
declared:
" 'See what is going on in Eng
'and; let us spare ourselves that, and
give, the women c' Norway ..l.ai. 1j
right for them to have just as much
as :t. is right for the men to have it.'
And the women of Norway got the

pected to be criticised even by our
American sisters who are . fighting
along different lines in the United
Spates for the ballot. But af tsr all,
it is our only way." We have been
grossly tricked and deceived timo af
ter time by those government officluls
who are opposed to woman suffrage.
We have been treated like children
and ridiculed as unworthy of the bal
lot until we came to realize that this
fight is one that must be won by the
most heroic of methods. Conditions
in England are vastly different from
conditions in America and therefore
we have to adopt a vastly different
campaign in order to geti what so
many American women have secured
through less 'noisy' methods. And
why ' all this strenuous opposition to
giving us the vote? I think a fair
minded judge would say, after con
sidering all the evidence not a hi era
part of it,' but all of it that so far
not one sound argument has been of
fered why we should not be allowed
to help in the making of the laws that
rule us and that make us pay taxe
on our property. Sometimes it ac
tually amuses me to see the futile
efforts of the opponents of woman
suffrage to stave off what is a cer- j
tainty. Votes for women in England
is as certain as death. It is certain
to come in every civilized nation. It
may be very slow in coming, but it
issurely coming, so why fight against
the inevitable in this foolish fashion?
"We began our campaign by mere
ly preaching. We have continued it
by acts of violence window smash
ing, etc. and we haven't given out of
ideas yet. By degrees we are en
larging our sphere of action. We shall
do bigger, and bigger things. And
perhaps they will say:
"Let's have done with ail this. Gi'
