T i 'HE devout villagers of Oberam-1 mergau present every decade their well known Passion Play, which attracts thousands of spectators from all over the civlliied world. But Oberammergau has no monopoly on this, for from the very oarllest times of ChrlBtien ' history, ) . V. The Christian year commemorates in orderly sequence, the main facts, wtereby our salva tion was wrought by Him who came down from heaven, and became man In order to effect this. At Christmas, the Holy Nativity occupies the staije, at Bphyphany, visit of the wise men from the east, and so on. During bo last Ave weeks '-bat weird fast and temptation In the wilderness has been set before ns, and now we are about to behold the great tragedy of the drama, the Passion, Crucifixion and the Burial of Jesus Christ. This coming week is called Holy Week, because It Is most particularly set apart by the Church- for the de vout and religious commemoration of those solemn ' and tragic events, which culminated on Calvary. Dur ing the coming week these are reen acted, by being brought most vividly to our remembrance, through special services and devotions. TbJ partic ular act of the drama, is one contin ual shifting of scenes from the tri umphal entry Into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, until the setting sun on Good Friday, sees the hasty committal of the bruised and scarred Body to the tomb. - Not only Is the' Passion thus pre sented to the faithful wherever this week Is observed, but the whole com munity Is drawn Into It. either know ingly or unknowingly. 1 The facts which are commemorated ave universal effect, being done on behalf of the whole human race, past, present and future, and the parts of the original spectators or partici pants, save that of the August Suffer er, are taken by us. I have only the right to call to ac count those who are under my charge and for them the order of services is printed elsewhere. There are others, T rejoice, who will also solemnly keep watch with pryer and fast and thus consecrate the week. To others who believe in the events thus com memorated, but do not feel any par ticular observance Is incumbent op them, I would kindly point out, that they are preparing to rejoice with special services on Easter Day. They wijl sing with us:"JesuB Chrtet Is risen today, Allelulla!" But where fore rejoice on EaBter, If we mourn not on Good Friday? for the two go together and cannot.be separated. I commend to them these words of John Wesley, whom many of them re vere as their spiritual father: "Be hold, I saw an ocean of light and love flow over an ocean of darkness and death, nnd In -that I saw the Infinite love of God: and the day on which It flowed over the ocean of darkness and death was Good Friday."
