All Classes of Property For Sale at Our Office La Grande Investment Co.. 1111 ADAMS AVE, LA GRANDE, OR. At the 14th International confer ence of the Railroad . Young Men's Christian Association "great Interest was shown. If the more than 1600 delegate present at this conference In Chicago in 1912, there were eight railroad' presidents, 13 vice presi dents, five general managers, besides many other officials. This branch of the Y. M. C A. Is doing a great work and both employers and employes are showing their appreciation. . One of the very Interesting' addresses of the session, was given by W. G. Lee, pres ident of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.1 His address as It appears In the Railroad Association . Maga alne follows: . "Mr. MuniC delegates and visitors to the 14th International conference of the' Young Men's Christian Asso ciation: In accepting the honor that has been conferred upon me, 'it Is with the - understanding . that the credit and honor go to the association that I happen to represent Some time ago your good secretary, Broth er Moore, wrote to me and asked it I would be kind enough to attend at least one 6ay session, I consented and came here this morning for the purpose of meeting with you for. a few 'moments, ;' -v .".;. Why should not the chief executive of all of these railway organizations be In favor of the Y. M. C. A., pari! cularly the Railroad Young Men's Christian Association, because they better than many people, know the good work that has been done, the assistance . that has been rendered; and the wholesome meals prepared, the sanitary' conditions" that are fur nished to our men when they could not be able to secure them other wlset . ' ;" ' " T '. 1 ' I know something of what the Railroad Y. M. C. A. has done for the men I represent over this country, and I wish It were possible to say to you that every trainman In the Unit ed States and Canada held member ship in the Y. 'if. C. A. (Applause.) I wish It -were possible to say to you, as I have heard said in the past, that all good men hold membership In a certain organization, but unfor Innately all members of that organ ization are not good men. In hold lng membership In the'Y. M. C. A., and yon secretaries and men hand ling the Y. M. C. A.'s In the different parts of the country may In some In stances form a rather bad opinion of some of the members of these organ izations or some of your member ship, I will say men bow the knee In these four great brotherhoods and in some of the others, and swear to be upright, better men and better citizens. In every way. Some of them fa'l to do It, unfortunately. In our own organization Benevolence. Bo brlety and Industry is the motto on the banner. Sobriety! -It Is a great virtue to be sober in thought, word and action and the founders of our Brotherhood appreciated the dangers of Intemperance when they inscribed that grand motto on our eanner. In temperance murdeas the soul. It I the son of all villainy, the mother of all crime, and the father of all abom ination. And so, why should not the president of .the Brotherhood of Rail road Trainmen come to you today bringing the best wishes of 'more than 125,000 members? (Applause.) Sometimes It Is necessary to refer to those gone before us In order to bring those who are left to a proper realization of their duty, and so In calling your attention to the fact that In 1911 the records of the Broth erhood of Trainmen show that we paid for death and disability Insur ance to 1742 men In. 111. Vllled or totally disabled. TV- s'l-n was $2. 197.170. The Brothcilinod fiat -paid since Its organization to the widow, the orphan and to the .maimed the sum of 125.014,304.31, up to October NEW rOLSY BUILDING PHONE MAIN 199 l, 1912.. (Applause.) That money has rone Into the homes of railroad men to assist in the work that you are do ing, to assist to take care of the'llt- tle ' ones, those dependant upon the waKe-earner, and so I hope that I can attend your conferences often, and be able to say to you soon that hundreds and hundreds more of tho 122,000 men In our organization have In the work of the Y.
