1UaV. THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1913. LA GRANDE EVENING 0 I' s mcoEs UP I LITTLE MWHTA61S IN 0B3ENT BEINGS BETTEB PBJCE& Cattle and Hogg Hlgher-Lemoa Prlees 8oar Swiftly.. : ; From the coast comes the newi that on account of the shortage of wheat In the orient the price of wheat In the United 8tates has goiys up. It seems to have affected all of Ithe markets alike . and blue stem went up a whole cent in ! one '1 day. This la taken as an Indication that from now on the orient will look to the United States for Its wheat,; un til the market In South America be gin unloading. It might be safely rodlcted that before spring the price of wheat will be In the .neighborhood ef the dollar mark and perhaps high er. For the man who has held on to his rop this Is going to mean a good many dollars over the fall prices. .'';'""' i Cattle and Bogs Higher. ' Cattle have brought eight cents for eome of the, poorer grades and hogs went up ten cents on account of the ehortage. The receipts were not up to the standard and bidding, was lively. Unless the market Is flooded with hogs before Saturday the price will not vary greatly between now and then.' , Celery Coming from California. A carload, of celery Is on the way to Portland from Jersey Inland, Cali fornia, the first to be shipped since the frost. Jersoy Island Is off thn southern coast of California and the frost 1b said not to have done as Bush damage there as on the main land. . " I "' ' '" . Suspicions of Orange. Four cars of good oranges are aid to be on the track In the metro polis, but the 'suspicion that' they might be frozen has caused buyers to let them severely alone. There Is a goodly supply on the La Grande market but It la only a question of time when oranges will not be ob tainable. Lemons will be so expen sive that the refreshing drink at five cents will not be dished out this summer at that price unless some other country comes to the rescue. The Democrat ays of the snow conditions here:'' According to the reports reaching the local efflces of many of the lum ber companies operating alonig the line of the Sumpter valley, the snow In the woods may necessitate a tem porary suspension of operations. ' It was stated that there Is five feet of snow on the level at 'Whitney and that It Is very difficult to handle logs, and also that It Is becoming harder every day to handle teams In ' the woods. One report was to the effect that Mien the trees are felled, they throw the snow up waist high around, the laborers, and that a continuance of tile downfall, which has been steady the past few days, will soon make it Impossible to continue work At Austin, where three large mills are located, there is also consider able difficulty but there Is not quite so much Bnow there to hamper oper ations. However, much more of "the beautiful" will certaln'y cause trouble and the lumbermen are hop ing for a cessation of the downfall, which is as long continued as' any nf recent years. WEI&HTS AND MEASURES. Car With Whloh England's Standards Are Preserved. .. Bvery- twenty years government offl rials compare the current weights and measure with the standards, which re sealed up In tbe staircase of the bouse of commons. .. There are only two standards, the pound weight and the yard measure. Tbe standard pound Is of platinum, which despite Its weight Is no larger than a cubic Inch. and. small as it Is, the metal of which it la composed Is worth MO. Tbe standurd yard Is a bur of bronze thirty-eight luetic long, oir which a yard bas been marked off In thirty-nix divisions of an lucb. The greuteitt iMmslble care Is taken of thane two Important articles. Wlu-u ii coinpnrlHon Is being mude they are handled with tongs. ' The. pouud weight Is weighed In the most j delicate of chemical balances, uud the yard Is tneaxured with a micrometer. When they are dime with the pound It Is wrapped In a special soft paper and laid In a silver gilt Case, which Is plac ed In a bronze cane, this being put In a wooden box. afterward screwed down and sealed. The ynrd measure Is plac ed on eight rollers In a mubognny case, which Is carefully Mealed. Botb cases are then put Into a leaden casket which Is sealed by ttolileiiug. Tbe packing Is not yet finished, however, for the lead case Is placed In a strong oak box. When this in screwed down It Is placed in the bole In the wall., Tbe wall. to. built up by a mason, and tbe standards can only be obtained by demolishing It once more.
