Effort of some , members of the council may not be entirely correct In the plan of procedure to bring the credit of La Grande up towards par, but the effort is golag to be thorough 1 ly appreciated by every taxpayer and the hope Is entertained that the pres-j ent administration may find a way to! make the city's warrants go to par.t J The plan to' use public money al ready on hand In different funds to! Invent In the city's own paper sounds all right The objection raised was that tome of the eecurltles bad been 1 purchased at a discount and there! fore to pay par would add to the spec ulator's profit. This objection may be welt founded but It Is almost cer tain that when the city take the bold strides of placing Its paper up to par It will be found, do matter when this Is done, that some one has invested In discounted paper as a speculation. There Is always a legal phase to the altuaton and that must be Con sidered In. It fullest sense. General fund warrants In a city aa healthy as La Grande should not be selling be low par, and there certainly is a legitimate way to bring them up. At the last meeting of the council prices of commodities purchased by the city In some Instances drove home the fact that when the pay is slow the price goes high In city matters the same as with Individuals LA GRANDE PI VISION HAKES GOOD . It Is of considerable satisfaction to note that La Grande's railroad divis ion made abundantly good during the late atorms. Where Washington mountain division were tied up and trains could not pet through for days, the mountain division of the O. W. R ft N.. which Is the La Grande divis ion, was shoving Its trains through wRh little delay. Constant vigilance and constau work combined made this possible. The cooperation of every department worked to one end, and the. remit was apparent to the traveling pub lic. The rotarles were on. the Job all of the time. Nothing was let lie In Idleness, for In fighting a blizzard Idleness Is sure defeat. : :Both Karaela and Telocaset.' each of which has been an enemy to ra'l roadlng from the time the road. was (built, failed to stop traffic this time. The railroad company has every reason to feel satisfied over the In vestment In snow plows, which in the hands of a bunch of men . who made good, gave the O. W. R. ft N. company the 'distinction and prestige; of carrying Its cross continent pass engers to destination whom compet ing lines were tied up Id the moun tains. .V! 25c, 40c and 50c DOZEN Buy now while the price is still the same. By the system evolved by Dr. Day, wood can be made to grow by the proper use of sunshine and the Intro. ductlon of necessary Ingredients In' to native soil. Forests treated by the Intensive method will grow seven times faster than wood can be used for heat, and there la no limit to the amount of fuel which can be pro duced.. The hue and cry aa to the dangers confronting us as to the present coal supply Is exhausted win subside as soon as the governmental experts can successfully demonstrate the theory of Intensive cultivation. Sev eral Important discoveries have been made along this line In the. growing of hot .house products. When out door vegetation can be made to re spond to fertilization, as hot house plants do to the Introduction of heat then the reforestratlon of the country will be assured, j It Is hoped that the coal men will : take warning and not boost their prices as high as they already have threatened to raise them.
