The Sun gays: Over one hundred ministers of th . state of Oregon will be In Wallow next Thursday evening, arriving here In the afternoon on a special car, to attend the annual meeting of the Ore' goD Synod of tlw Presbyterian church The sessions will last four days. Among the meetings which open Thursday and close Sunday of next week, there will be several public meetings which will be interesting to the people of Wallowa. Mr. Ng. Poon Ch-?w, editor of a Chlnaee newspaper In San Franc luoo will deliver an ad dress on Friday evening. On Satur - day evening there will be a meeting In tho Interest of home missions, sev. era! prominent ministers from over the s'Me being scheduled for addrcs sea. Another public meeting will be, held Sunday evening. Wallowa in making special arrange ments for the entertainment of the visitors, and according to the pro gram now arranged, every effort will be made to send the visitors away with a favorable Impression of this part of the state. This alone will assure that the city wll be crowded for the week. ' Popular Itailroud Man Spends Sunday In City. "Hello, Jack, how are you?" This came from the throat of every one yesterday who met Jack Watson, wife and daughter, of Seattle, who came in to spend the day with old friends. And the salutation was of that deep, earnest kind which meant what It said. La Grande has had few men who enjoyed the friendship of all as did Jack Watson, and he was rich ly entitled to the splendid standing he had in this community. He Informed a reporter for the Eve ning Observer that he Is well pleased with his new position, which is with the Harriman system at Seattle. His work is some different from what he did here, but he likes it Mrs. Watson's health has greatly improved and the daughter is well. In speaking of Seattle Jack said: "Seattle is really a great city. It has the deep water which means much. Every day big boats anchor there and the Alaskan trade is something won derful. SWISS WRESTLERS. Curious Contests In Which They Dis play Marvelous Strength. Wrestling seems to be an Interna tional sport, but one of the most curi ous styles to be seen is probably that of the Swiss. There Is generally an Immense meeting of the wrestlers every year, called the "swlngerfest" meaning literally the "festival of swinging," and to this festival come the mountain men from all parts of Switzerland. It takes place In an Immense arena, generally four or six couples wrestling at the same time, with stands around for the audience The men who are wrestling each wear a pair of short knickers, very loosely worn, and made of some stout material, with a leather belt at the top to strap It on round the waist, over their costume, and the Idea Is to catch their opponents bv these knickers and throw them. Both shoul ders must touch the ground, and tbe men are not allowed to bold their op ponents except by the knickers. Of course It Is mainly a question of brute strength, and on nearly all oc casions the mountain men prove tbe better of the towusmen. Very often a man will throw his opponent clean over bis shoulder through tbe air. and when one considers that this must be done only by gripping a piece of sail cloth or sucb like material In either band, at the height of a man's loins, some Idea can be gathered of the marvelous strength shown on these oc caslona.
