Sunday proved a big day at the First M. B. church. In the morning after a Bplendld anthem by the choir under the direction of Prof. Arm strong, Dr. E. B. Fyke preached a strong sermon, (using as bis subject "The Helping arm of the Church." In the evening Dr. Fyke chose as his subject "The Ideal Man." A large audience heard his splendid address. A brief summary of his lecture fol lows: The scarcity of men In comparison to the demand for men In every age has been appalling. No less true of our own age. Dr. Fyke showed that there had been a complete transition of the baBlc principles of manhood from the physi cal to the spiritual and intellectual using as an illustration tbe Arena scene' from Quavadls. He found In th modern Ideal the following elements of manhood: Self DlBCOvery. He said tile greatest knowledge Is self knowledge. In self discovery everyone will find they have a body but they are a spirit. This dual nature has expressed it- jielf In history. To this element he added self re liance, stating this Is not an age of plagesism. He urged young people to trust their own thoughts. Quoting from Emerson, "TruBt your own thouKhts. someone will say tomorrow with masterly greatness what you have thought all the while, and you will be compelled to take your own 'opinion from the lips of another". ' Then he placed by the side of these elements self P?.speet, not egotism but rising to the knowledge of the thought of the Creator regarding men. ' He said: He is tlw answer to all that has preceded Him in creation. He bears the Image of God. It cost- much to redeem him. He has a glorious d.'Btlny before him. Can we think little of ourselves when God thought io much of us. To this he added self mastery. Illustrating by Napolean the nuistery of ambition, drawing a vivid phtnre of a forest Are uncontrolled. He brought before his hearers the fact that fires burn In our own beings that if uncontrolled will bring destruction to character. Thie last element was self investment This he illustrated by Lincoln's Invest ment in the I'nion and Its great re sults. Then closing: He found a con crete example in the Christ and closed his discourse by the words of Pilate "llehold the Man".
