'.!- - : Political Conventions A writer said: "But war's a game at which if their subjects were wise, Kings would not play." Another writer might with some propriety say: "Politics is 'a game at which It the people were wise, politicians would not play." After the spectacle af forded by the menageries at Chicago' and Baltimore, it may be conjectured tbat the time Is coming wnen with little cost to anyone, the selections for these high offices will be made by the simple initiative of the people who are to. do the voting, pay the taxes, bear the burdens of the common wealth and are eternally the backbone, ribs, head, tall and all the remaining possible accessories of the state. Popular Government. Best government is the arranging i of popular affairs In such manner as will give the masses tne best protec tion In all things at the least trouble and cost to themselves. The educat ed element of our nation is so strong and constitutes now so large a factor in tbings material that the matier o' choosing a president Is both easier ana harder than ever before; it is eas ier In the fact there are so many equally capable, and harder because among equals it la not easy to find him who should be first. Truly wc . r notion cf crei.t people. Our high srhoo's are better eunlpped and have uo.ici- courses of study than had the .diversities of a hundred years ago. The capacity for intelligent citizenship may be no greater than, formerly, but the opportunty for higher achievement never was equal to that of today, and our people are taking advantage of it :i. They are the thoughtful rulers, too. (Imntauq.ua. Chautauqua comes but once a year and every year Is better jn Grande Ronde. I'nion and La Grande Since old Father Time began to whet his scythe, never has there been so fine a manifested spirit between the two greater towns of our magni ficent valley. Could there have been a warmer reception accorded anyone anywhere than the one the Chautau qua boosters received in Union last Tuesday evening. If they could do so royally without notice what would they have done had they but known! We shall not try to guess. We have no occasion to wish they had been notified. Grande Ronde Products. Unsurpassed for wheat, apples, I CO THE STEAM-ROLLER is at work on Washington Avenue. . Chicago and Baltimore have no option on the services of this well-known machine. "Teddy" and "Bill" have recently tested its leveling qualities and can swear to and at its efficiency. In the hands of the Republican and Democratic Parties it has proven itself an instrument of corrup tion and conservatism. In La Grande it is performing its work in the interests of growth and progress. . It is converting a country road into a city street It is making available for res-; idence purposes the finest natural building sites in this city. It is marking a great forward step in the rapid growth of the most progressive and prosperous town in the northwest La Grande. It is also creating out of CONNORDALE the most accessible, the most valuable and the most highly improved, restricted, and beautiful residence section of the city. If you are considering building a home, investing surplus funds or speculating on u SURE THING, be sure and see CONNORDALE before the best of the remain ing 50 lots are gone. If you have not been down over this beautfully situated and : u!ly improved addition yet, let us take you down in an. automobile and show you the work in progress. We will leave it to you to exercise your own JUDG-" MENT as to whether or not you ought to buy. La Grande Development LalGrande National Bank Building. Call Red cherries or whatever, is planted, the Grande Ronde has' an enviable history. Yet the best products are her boys and girls. They are filling all sorts of positions of honor and trust within tl'A borders of the state and many of thorn are to be found elsewhere. When the best Is wanted, "Go to Grande Ronde valley, it is there!" Just now a great branch of the Harrlman sys tem of railways and ships needed an attorney on - whom It could depend. What did the managers doT They came to La Grande and took a simon pure product, Charlie Cochran.
