The award recently made at Poca- tello, Idaho, for bltuUthlc paving, was practically unanimous, as the deci sion was reached 6nly after the com mittee appointed for that purpose, and a number of Interested property own ers had made a very thorough investl gatlon of the paving In use In the more progressive cities of the north west. The durability of this paving. which means a low cost of mainte nance, combined with Its beautiful ap pearance, the entire absence of chuck- holes, and the fact that It has a non- slippery surface, which adds to the safety of both horse and auto drivers, has caused bitullthlc paving to make s remarkable advance In public favor. Property owners In Pocatello are enthusiastic advocates of Its merits as the practical, ' economical pavement which will withstand all tests of traf fic and climatic conditions. HUMPHREYS, Recorder of the City of La Grande. CURIOUS BATTLEFIELDS. An indoor Attack and Cavalry Charge en a Naval Fores. At the battle of Monterey, in the Mexican war, our troops were able to command tbe street of the city with their artillery, but they experienced much difficulty In driving tbe Mexicans from tbelr hou Aowdlngly. as the city was built of stnn or adobe, the American tirnk rhrouitu tbe walls from one ouiim io another, lighting and driving out tbe enemy as tbey proceed ed. Tbu. it appears, tbe battle of Monterey wan largely fought Indoors. In tbe time of William tbe Silent when the Netherlands were fighting tbe Spaniards, a number of 8panlab vessels bees me frozen In on the Zuy der Zee. Out csme tbe Dutch on horse back on tbe Ire to attack the Span lards. This is probably the only battle of record wherein cavalry was em ployed directly against a naval force. There have been bsttles fought un derground. Cblefest of these was ths fierce encounter pertaining to the siege of Haarlem In tbe Dutch wars. Tbe Spaniards mined and the Dutch countermined wltb equal industry, and below tbe ground a terrific conflict en sued. When, sfter the commune, the Ver ssllles troops took Paris they chased terrain of the eomrounlat forces to tbe greet sewers of tbe French capital, and in these more tbao one sanguinary bat tle occurred.
