The editor of this paper has asked
nie to write something about the Y.
M. C. A. and its work. About four
weeks ago some of the business men
of La Grande with the co-operation
of I. B. Rhodes, state secretary of tiie
T. M. C. A., organized a local Y. M. C.
A. I write as the employed ecreury
of that organization..
Relation of a Y. M. C. A. to the City
The aim of this organization la to
co-operate with every agency which
tends toward the upoullding of the
threefold lives of the men and boys
of the entire community.
Agencies for good do not at present
and probably never could successful
ly carry on all of the work that is
necessary to develop all sides of a
a man's life. Why? Because, no
single church can support the work.
No church Just now will satisfy the
beliefs of all people. What we need
Is a community plant, a Y. M. C. A
building which will, be, not a new de
nomination but a center with equip
inent to supply for all the things thru
no church alone can furnish for a
few. .
Until such a building can be secur
ed the work must necessarily be of
I the non-equipment type. I was told
I the other day at Portland that La

need to wait for some other city to

Our aim is the building of charac

(Y. M. C. A.) will soon be needed to
do this work. In the meantime we
must do the best wo can with what
we have.
The First More.
The first thing to do 'la to find out
where we stand. We want to know
how many boys are taking advantage
of the Sunday schools. Therefore erh
denomination has been asked to furn
ish a report. A survey of the city
is being made to secure general In
formation about every man and boy
nine years of age and over in the
community. There Is a purpose for
all of t.Ms. Will you assist in every
way in the completion of this survey.

along two main line: work with the
boys and an educational campaign to
let the people know what the Y. M.
C. A. is doing In other places In order
that they may understand the real
value to a community.
