Harriman, N. Y May 2. With in
teresting exercises and In the pres
ence of a distinguished gathering, a
tablet erected 'by the Association of
Railroad Telegraph Superintendents
and the ,01d Time Telegraphers' as
sociation to commemorate the sending
of the first telegraphic trfaln order In
1S51 was unveiled here today. It was
from the Erie railroad station at this
place, which was then known as Tur
ner, that the first telegraphic order
was sent by Charles Minot, the rail
road's general superintendent.
. The tablet commemorating the
event is of bronze and was designed
by Charles Keck of New York City.
It is six feet high by three feet, three
inches wide, and cost $4,000. The $2,
000 base ulpon which the tablet rests
was quarried from the Harriman es
tate, and was given by Mrs. E. H.
Harriman. The next largest contribu
tor to the fund was Andrew Carnegie,
who became a telegraphy operator
when he was 14 years old, and -who
is said to have sent the first tele
graphic traPn order on the Pennsyl
vania railroad at Pittsburg in 1S52.

A foreigner who was at work shovel
ing ore in tho bottom of a vessel which
lay In the port of a city in northern
Ohio jumped upon the bucket to ride
out of the hold. The increased burden
broke the hook by which the bucket
was attached to the lifting cable. Man
and bucket fell back into the hold, and
the man received injuries from -which
be died. An udmlulstrntor was ap
pointed, who sue3 the hoisting coiu
pnuy for damages. The lawyer em
ployed for the plaintiff was In conver
sation one day with a frioud, who re
marked: "I should think that the company,
after nn accident like that, would lose
no time In installing stronger hoisting
apparatus. It ought to be sufficient
warning." ;.' ' . ' '
