In all practical senses, Cochran Is
the only candidate from Union county,
and, all parties are now agrapd that,
despite the preachings of hostile trav

adopted the same policy. The only
other avowedly republican paper In
Umatilla county, the Pilot Rock Rec
ord, seems to be maintaining a strict
ly neutral attitude between Judge El
lis and Mr. Cochran. Equally as sigr
niflcant Is the fact that the Pendleton
East Oregonlan (Independent-demo-
cratc) which has Intermittently boost
ed 'I?unk in Its news columns and rec
ommended him to republicans In its ed
Itorial columns, has entirely ceased to
further stand sponsor for the speaker
of the house who was strangely absent
from the firing line when the battle

being fought out In such a manner
that all members bad to go on record.
The same Is true of the Canyon City
Eagle, republican, which is now neu
tral, but formerly actively supported
Rusk.
By reason of these and other im

Drainage Congress meets.
New Orleans, La April 10. The
second annual meeting of the National
Drainage congress formed, last year
was opened here today with a large
attendance of delegates representing
every state in the Union as well as
manv lartfa end small cities In - all
parts of the country, delegates of var
ious large commercial, industrial and
other civic bodies an drepresentatlves
of various college and agricultural
Institutions. The congress will re
main In session three days and will
devote Its attention principally to tho
consideration and discussion of the
national land reclamation plan which
has been worked out by a committee
appointed by the first congress. Ef
forts will be made to secure the co
operation and assistance of the na
tional government In the plans for
reclaiming for agricultural purposes
the 75,000,000 acres of overflow alluv
ial and swamp lands In the United-
States. Congress la to be urged to
create a commission to make the nec
essary surveys and estimates of cost
and to work out, In connection with
the several states affected, laws for
the gradual reclamation of such waste

Queen's Maid of Honor a, Bride, ,
London, April 11. With the King
and Queen smiling approval, Lady
Eileen Butler, the Queen's most beau
tiful maid of honor, today became the
bride of the Marquis of Stafford, ut
the most brilliant wedding that Lon
don expects to see this season. The
bride Is . the ..daughter of Lord and
Lady Laneborougb, while the bride
groom Is the son and heir of the Duke
of Sutherland. '

ding ceremony. ' The bride, who wa9
given away by her father, had no few
er than fourteen bridesmaids. .The
bridal gown was of rich brocatelle,

The wedding reception was held at
Orosvenor House, lent for the occas
ion by the Duke and Duchess of West

Stephen Carrol and Amanda Carrol
Dead at Union Today.
Union, April 11. (Special) Steph
en Carrol, a pioneer of the first water
In this, county, dropped. dead last eve
ning about ,5 o'clock , while after an
armful of wood. His ' continued ab
sence drew the attention of his aged
wife and she found him dead a few
moments later. The funeral services,
will be held here. '
. Today another Carrol,' though not
of the same kin, was buried in Union.
It was Mrs, Amanda Carrol, wife of
Daniel L. Carrol, who died about . a
year ago. . Her remains were laid
