Father of Field Hospital Retires.
Washington, D. C, April 11. Col.
John Van ' Renssalaer Hoff, of the
United States Army Medical t Corps,
closed an active career of forty years
In the army today, having been trans
ferred to the retired list by operation
or. law on account of age. Col. Hoff
is known as the creator of the United
States Field Hospital aa it exists in
the army today. He Is .responsible
also for much of the development in
sanitation as a branch of medical sci
ence. Col. Hoff is a native of New
York state and entered the army soon
alter the close of the civil war. . He
was conspicuous for his services in
the great army camps established dur

did duty as chief surgeon on Gen.

The Eddystone rocks form a very
dangerous reef. . lytns In the English
channel about fourteen miles from
riymouth, and here. In 1695, Henry
Wlnstnnley built the Orst lighthouse,
which lusted but eight years.
Wiustunley's tower was swept awuy
by a tremendous storm, and every one

was drowned. Three years later Rud

! stroyed by fire in 1755. and then came
