' look after the oil lamps. Let him see how much time It takes daily
to. clean, fill and trim them, thaat might be employed lu more profit
able pursuit.
Oil lamps are a nuisance. They are most unsatisfactory lights at
best. They smoke, flare and give out noxious gases. Perfect ventila
tion is impossible because it isn't safe to raise the windows where
there are curtains to bo blown. Then an. open window makes an un
steady light, which means danger from explosion.
Doughtless there are some-people who will always use loll lamps, but
the vast majority are reaizing that, measured by the standard of
