H OF COVE VETERAN OF BATTLE V1LLE. OF ASH. Kentucky Native Pasties Away at Cove This Week. Cove, Jan. 27. (Special) John Itf, S. Smith was born on a farm ne.ir Aux vafise, Calaway county, Mo, July 4, 18311.' He spent his boyhood days in tl'.o farm and from the district school, flu-, ished his education at Mount Sterling, Kentucky. ' -. In 1861 just as his school days closed, he enlitsed In the 24th Ken tucky Infantry under Colonel Grlgsby, in 'defense .of. 'Ms country. He took part In the memorable battle of Nash ville, Tenn., and gave over three yea's of his lite to the defense of his coun try's flag for which, on his return home he endured persecution at ths bands of his old neighbors, who were In sym pathy with the south ; , . Mr. Smith removed to Oregon with his family in the year 1892, locating at Cove, where he has plnce resided. On March 19, 1911, he was stricken with paralysis; be. has since been a sufferer, yet bearing his affliction wl'.h great patience and resignation. For some days he had been gradually grow ing weaker, when on Friday, Jan lSf., 1912, at 7:10 In the evening, surround ed by loving friends,' In his beautiful home In west Cove, be quietly passed away, at the advanced age of 75 years, six months end 15 days. He leaves one son, J. Wesley Smith, and famllv besides many frlenta to mourn his death. . Mr, Smith was a kind, Indulgont father, a general, helpful neighbors, al ways pleasant and cheerful, a good up right man In business, and htghly es teemed by his mahy friends The funeral services were held 'n the home, conducted by Rv. A. Coslet, of the Methodist Episcopal church. A very Impressive song service was rendered by Mr. and Mrs Roy Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Anderosu, Mrs. Lay presiding at the piano, afte? which the remains were borne to their final resting place In the Cove cemelery by pall-bearers chosen from among his special friends.
