Newspapers Sing Praises of Visiting
Delegation Lust Wecki
Southern Oregon papers are pro
fuse in their praise pf the recent visit
to Southern Oregon by the La Grande
business men. Here are two comments
on the trip:

They came to learn, and the questions
for information plied by them to our
local speakers evinced a hunger for
a better knowledge of the Rogue river
valley. La Grande 4s three hundred
miles east of Portland, and they had
come all this way seeking better knowl

broaden their, business acquaintances.
Ashland did herself proud, 'The visi
tors were pleased,; They know, a great
deal more about this' part of the state
by reason of their visit, and thousands
of dollars In advertising value will
come to Ashland by reason of It.
There were twenty-five of the vis
iting party, every one "live ; wires."

cause it is a city with a big spirit. , .
Ten autos, supplied by Ashland cit
izens, met the La Grande business men
at the depot. .They were first taken to
the magnificent new high school fund
ing, then driven over the city and un
loaded at the Oregon hotel, where the
Commercial club, through Mr. Connor,
had prepared for them a splendid six
course dinner. After that the company
'retired to the Commercial club rooms
where a number of citizens were In
waiting to give the Visitors the glad
hand. Ashland's two-weeks-old orches
tra waa there, and played like veter
,ans of Sousa's band. Even Ashlanders
were aroused' to the pleasant knowl
edge that. the. city was blessed with
an orchestra of real musicians.
About twenty tV.ort speeches wero
mostly by the visitors. President
made, some by our homo men, but
Brlggs and Secretary Day conducted
the intellectual festivities with a com
pleteness and zest which bespeaks
real life and telling work for the club
during this year,

sional men came here from the' fam
ous Grande . Ronde ir Valley, whose
fields, embracing 800,000 broad acres,
are surrounded by mountains of A1-,
pine proportions and beauty. And
"live wires" these men are, every one!
of them, In- the affairs of their city,
county and state. ' During the after
noon they were shown about our city
in automobiles, and they were most
agreeably surprised at our seven miles
of paved streets, modern buildings,
fine surroundings and general air of
prosperity and prdgress..
Their loyalty to home was attested
during the evening by their "booster
yells" for La Grande and the "G. R. I
V.," liberally Interspersed with sing
ing, among others, to the tune of
Glory, Hallelujah:
Roseburg, Roseburg, how . we love
you,
And we'll come back again,"
Their loyalty to the whole state
was shown by singing, both before the
river valley.
Citizens of Ashland should manifest
more Interest in occasions of this kind.
Through such methods cities are. stim
ulated and grow. Nothing Is ever lost
by the proper entertainment of visiting
delegations. , ,

night for their train enroute home.

At the banquet which was an elabor
ate affair and elegantly, served, Hon.
Dexter Rice acted as toastmaster.
Among those there assembled wero
Jive mayors From La Grande, Hot
Lake, Island City, Sutberlln and Rose
burg. : While "five cooks may spoil
a broth," these Ave. mayors were in
entire harmony with the occasion,
which, proved one of the most enjoy
able "held here In a long time. Hon.
Blnger Hermann welcomed the visit
ors in an abl address which was
eloquently responded to by Attorney
Chas. E. Cochran, of La Grande. At
the suggestion of Jolih Collier, presi
dent of the Peoples Store of La Grande
the visitors sang, "Oregon, My Oregon"
Mr. Collier is the dean, organizer and
general chaperone of this party. His
business partner' is Chas. Clements,
formerly of Roseburg. The song was
followed by an address by Bruce Den
nis, owner and publisher of the La
Grande Observer. . He is a live Ore
gon booster at all times and backs,
his faith by his works. He also paid
a high tribute to Roseburg'B publicity
manager, G. P. Schlosser. '
Hon.- Walter Pierce, former .jstate
senator, now proprietor and manager
of the famous Hot Lake Sanatorium,
gave perhaps' the most eloquent "ad-,
dress of -the evenlng'in which a mag
nificent future for the whole state
was forecasted. Judge J. W. Hamil
ton closed the speechmaklng with an
able dissertation on the great natural
resources of Oregon, including- also
the great Institutions which aro being
built up, especially along educational
linos. He holds that the public prob
lems of today will be solved by the
young men who . are being educated
In these schools.
After the banquet, the assemblage
at the Commercial Club was a brilliant
one. Music, games, aancing ana social
converse sped the time right mer
rily, Roseburg being the only place
on their trip where the ladles turned
out to greet these visitors from East
ern Oregon. - The guests pronounced
themselves as being greatly pleased
thereby and that their reception here
waa therefore the finest they had ex
prlenced during their nine days Jour
ney. '
, This trip has been a general get
together meeting for the whole state.
They did .not come either to sell their
goods or their products, but simply
to get acquainted and together, help
to. build up a greater Oregon. . The
boundless hospitality shown them at
every place was extolled and the ex
periences of this trip will be a treas
ured memory for life. Besides this
their only expressed wish was to carry
away with them a Bhare of the love
and esteem of the excellent people
they had met in this historic and now
progressive city of the Umpquas.
