Col. Koosevelt i besieged by re
porters at his office and his borne. He
is tbe central figure In a political sit
uation that knows no parallel in this
country. The reporters are waiting,
just as thousands of others are wait
ing, while Impatience consumes their
souls, for Mr. Roosevelt to make a
Statement. They are expectant of an
utterance of his views on the presiden
tial situation, and none has been -fortli-omlng.
Col. Roosevelt has declined
to commit blmeolf and has kept his
own counsel, which is exactly the
course that is to be expected of him
under the circumstances. What state
ment would he be likely to make at
this time? That he is a candidate for
the republican nomination? That he
will not be a candidate under any
conditions? Hardly. Mr. Roosevelt
scarcely would place himself in a po
sition that eafly might become em
barrassing through the making of
neb a statement. Nothing is to be
expected of him but silence and If be
volunteers anything it will be the
revenlatlon of a new trait in the man.
If Col. Roosevelt lias any designs
upon tbe republican nomination at
4hla time, and such a design Is. not
Jlkely, he is astute enough to recog
jnize that silence Is his best accom
plice. The veriest novice In politics
would have sufficient perception to
realize that if there Is a demand (or
Jim. by the republicans, It will be
strengthened and Increased much
more by his silence than by any state
ment he might make. If a Roosevelt

that will enable him to be a Judge of

cumstance hard to reckon with, and
if Col. Roosevelt doQned his position
at this time he would be obliged to be
guided by It In the future no matter
what arose.

St. Helena nns been an Island of
