WOMEN DEPUTY SHERIFFS NEWEST WRINKLE I GOTHAM New York, Jan. 12. Women duputy aliei'ilTs are tho latest Innovation for New York City and county. Pretty misses and wealthy society matrons will hereafter wear the badge of u deputy sheriff and make arrests just like mnlo officers of tho law. Sheriff Julius Ilarburger Is respon sible, nnd he expects great things from' his "female s(iiad''. Among tho wo-j men who have already been named aro 51 rs. John Crosby, president of ths New York Women's Democratic club and Miss Cornelia Swlnnerton, nlead er of the suffragists. Mrs. Carolino Trunx, widow of the late Justice Truax, is among others who are to be mined, while a list of names has been submitted by 5Irs Crosby. Sheriff Marburger said today he would appoint just ns many' women deputies ns there are applicants who aro montally nnd physically fit to serve, and who can furnish the $10, 000 bond necessary. Tho women will receive no compensation. "I believe the morality of New York City will bo greatly heightened by the appointment of my women deputies. ' said the sheriff. "Tho women will have full power to mako arrests the Bame as the men. They will be espe cially valuable In going through the factories. In protecting young girls at the public danco halls, on the subways and In all public (daces, "This is a phase of an officer's work which obviously can be better done by women than by men. "Not only that." continued tho sher iff, "but the women deputies will be able to get evidence from others of their sex that a man would bo nimble to secure. "There will be some swains here abouts somewhat surprised when, ns they are dancing with a winsome girl they drop Into the 'Grizzly Boar,' the 'Turkey Trot' or some other Indelicate and offensive dance, only to have a badge flashed on them by their pnrt- ner and be tnken to the station house" and tho sheriff chuckled at the thought. Mrs. Jessie Blgelow. aged 50, was shot through the heart and Instantly killed today by Joseph Rider, her former husband from whom she -was divorced In St Ixmis years ago. At 7:45 tills evening the whistle will sound for the tossup of the first half of the Union-La Grande glrla' game at the high school gym. Twenty minutes later the boys of the same schools will clash and bo on alter nately until both the boys and girls have completed their contests with the visiting athletes and "athletesses." Nothing definite as to lineups has been announced but It Is likely that the girls will send the following on the floor subject to changes: Center, Anna Topp (captain), guards, Runa Bacon and Hilda Anthony; forwards, Olive Massee (manager) and Louise iRoesche. The boys' game will likely see two completely different teams yet cir cumstances will determine this. In any. event, the following will be se lected from; Centers, Bohnenkamp and Kail; forwards, Roberts, Woods Kail, Bolton, Reynolds, Crawley; the guards, Enlston, Lottos, Bolton. Lutheran services with holy com munlon will be held next Sunday af ternoon at 2 o'clock in Zlon Lutheran church on 51 street. The service will be conducted by Rev. Theo. Sehoenberg, traveling mis sionary of tho Pacific coast synod of the Lutheran denomination. The trav missionary's visit to this city Is for the purpose of establishing a Luthoran church here and all the brethren and friends of the Lutheran faith, no mat ter what the mother tongue may be are heartily Invited to be present at this service. The same will be con ducted In the English language. MODES OF TRAVEL From the Jaunting Car to tho Modern Elsotrio Railway. The first jaunting car wax establish ed In Ireland in 1815 by o Milanese, Carlo Blanconi, who settled in Dublin and drove every day to Caher and hack, charging twopence a mile. From this small beginning in 1837 he had established si.xty-even conveyances, drawn by 000 horses. The extension of modern manufac turing towns and cities demanded still greater conveniences, which were sup plied at flrst by the omnibus lines, which up to 18C0 were the chief means of urban nnd interurban transporta tion. To these succeeded the street railroad, traversed by ears drawn by one or more horses, and these in turn became wholly Inadequate to meet the demand of the suburban districts. The cable car, drawn by underground cable, was the next Innovation, but tills about 1SS0 to 1S00 was supplanted by tho electric trolley lines, and these agnin were supplemented in many cit ies by elevated aud subway lines in which the cars were propelled by elec tricity supplied by a third rail. This latter device has already been applied to extended lines of railroads, and It is not unlikely that the present cen tury will witness the electrification of most of the railroad linos In thickly settled countries.
