(Special) After five years of preparation, ground will be broken today for the first Reed col lege buildings on the campus of SO acres In the city of Portland. The college will open next September In the permanent buildings, and on the endowment foundation of about ?3, 000,000, "provided by Mr. and. Mrs Simeon G. Reed of Portland. The beginning Is the culmination of a full year's work on the part of. the president and the architects, Doyle Patterson and Beach. Every colleg'j In the United States and Canada, not-! able for 1st grounds and buildings, has! been visited. The trustees are satis fied thatt.in the group plan they have anticipated the growth of a century and embodied In the specific plans of the first buildings all . the best Ideas available anywhere. .". Last week the contract for the 'first two buildings was awarded to the Sound Construc tion company, and already the ground has been tested for the foundations. At the breaking 1 of ground this week, there will be a brief and Bimple ceremony, In the presence of trustees faculty, students and friends. Dr. T Lamb Eliot, president of the board of trustees, will preside, The Honorable Cyrus A. Dolph has been Invited to deliver the commemorative address. " For the opening of the collage next September, three principal buildings in addition to residences of the facul ty, will bo ready the Arts building the dormitory, and the gymnasium. All the buildings will be in the Collegiate-Gothic style of architecture. The material will be Indiana : Umestono and mission brick. The Arts building and dormitory wilt be of steel and concrete structure, fire proof through out. The buildings will run against the wooded' ravine and lake, which are picturesque features of the cam pus. The Arts building Is 257 feet long with wings 85 feet long, It has four stories, The estimated cost of the building and furnishings Is $225, 000. The dormitory, which la virtu ally Ave separate dormitories, contains a large club room for men students, a dining hall, and rooms and baths for 125 students. The cost of this build ing, exclusive of furnishings, is $140, 000,: There will be accommodations for women students, in' charge of Dr Eleanor Harris Rowland, who comes to Portland In September from Mount Holyoke college.
