Possessed with an Insane fear, he runs to the home of his sweetheart, sear which the battle Is being fought. The .girl first moved to laughter at the altered aspect ot her gallant soldier of a few (hours before at last feels that unquenchable loth In ir and hate for a coward which la planted in the breast of all true men and women, and orders the man whom she had once promised to marry, out of tine house.. In the con fusion after the first ruBh of battle, the vouni? soldier repnlns control of his nerves and rejoins bis comrades with out having been mlssdd from the ranks. The conflict gets hotter and hotter as the. fight is resumed. Both sides are en treanched and light wlth:desperatlon. Finally the Northern army runs out of ammunition.' In this perilous situation the young soldier who before had run away, but now Is most eager to make amends, volunteers to go through the lines of the enemy and bring up rein forcements and more ammunition. . General Grant has no men to spare but .fits out a wagon with ammunition and provides a scant escort. ThiB man euver has not escaped the confederates and they set fire to the timber through which the wagon has to pass, returning with; the powder. The soldiers of the escort are 'killed one by one and the driver la finally overcome by the heat ot the burning timber and falls from Ibis seat. At this the young soldier proves what he really Is. He jumps to the drivers seat, graaps the reins and rushes the wagon loaded with powder through the flaming timber and reaches ihls comrades In the Northern lines.
