hogs dropped, a new price on

Portland, Oct. 23.( Special) Since
the last report of thta exchange, Octo
ber 6th, the market has undergone
some rapid and radical changes, ana
the whole situation has taken on a
more settled and a vtery different com
plexion. Perhaps the season of 1911
will stand out in the history of the
northwestern apple deal as being with
out precedent, In many of Its phases.
The, feature of the market, at the
time It opened, was a very bearish sen
tlmenO on the part of thla eastern
dealers and operators, practically all
of whom "laid down'" completely, be
ing scared by the large eastern crops,
and disbelieving tho roports of a very
short crop In the northwest. However,
It began to be borne In upon their
minds that the crop In the Pacific
northwest waa really abort, and that
certain of this Important district not
only had a small crop, but of small
sizes.: The supply of strictly fancy
fruit of large sizes has turned "out to
be tremendously short, and the, de
mand for such fruit has developed
very strongly, at prlctae quite a little
better than last year. "
The situation in a nutshell Is this:
for extra fancy fruit of large sizes
four-tier and larger the supply Is In
sufficient to cover the demand, and
prices, herefore, are very Btrong. On
the! other hand, there Is no demand for
.off, grades,, and especially for small
sizes 4 tier and 5 tier, - Unfortu
nately, certain districts, notably Ida
ho, are producing a preponderance of
small sizes from one third to one
half of, the total being 5 tter.
The exchange finds no trouble In
making sales of Cashmere district frul

fruit, which runs ..largely to fancy
grades and large slzee, on the follow
ing basis: these prices being taken
from a large number of actual sales,
which are on sale with the Cashmere

The indications are that the market
vrlll close strong on flae and fancy

other description the demand is weak
