ten-round battle between Ad Wolgast
and Packey McFarland only two days
away, the followers of the fighting
game are beginning td smoke up
strong to this attraction, rt will be
the first championship affair that thl3
section of the country has seen In
years, and with the title at stake the
fang expect to see more action than
they generally see In a short clash,
Both Wolgast and McFarland ceas
ed their heavy work of training today
and will Indulge only in light exer
cise until the-time keeper's signal,

Wolgast appear to share . his confi
dence. The Chicago crowd, however,
can see nothing but the stock yards
fighter. Most of them assert that
McFarland should be the top favorite
In the betting. They contend that
Packey will overshadow the Cadillac
boy la ten rounds and earn a decisive
verdict, even if one will not be given.
The general vtew of the conserva
tive critics Is that the affair will be
an even go, and that It will lead to a
longer mill to be staged on the Pa
cific coast. To them it does not sesra
possible that McFatland will knock,
out the champion In ten rounds, nW
do they regard It as likely that Wol-.
gast will make Packey take the count.
History of Lightweight 'Championship
The lightweight, pugilistic cham
pionship, for which Wolgast and Mc
Farland are to battls, 'has been an
open and. much disputed title since
the adoption of the Marquis of Queens
berry rules. Jack McAullffe and Jew
Gans were about the only claimants to
the title whese; superiority was un

McAullffe showed his first cham
pionship form when he knock-id out
Billy Frazier In 21 rounds. McAullffe
won the championship of Canada al-j
bo. and clinched hlS claim to the title j

Carney at Revere, Mass., November 16.

year by Knocking out Jim Burge in
London in 17 rounds. Lavlgne was

a decision to Franke Erne in . 20
rounds at Buffalo. " ;
Erne held the championship three
years, losing H when Joe Gans knock
ed him out in one round at Fort Erie
May 13, 1902, acquiring the title that
was not wrested from him until he
nwt Battling Nelson at San Francisco
July 4, 1908. Nelson knocked out
the colored boy In the 17th round.
Nelson retained the title until his sec
ond battle with Wolgast, which took
place at Richmond, Cal,, February 22
of last y?ar. Wolgaat won In the 40tb
round. Referee Eddie Smith stopped
the fight and Wolgast was given cred
it for a knockout. Since then the
present champion, has .defended his
title against "Knockout" Brown Geo.
Memstc, "One .Round" Hogan, Frankie
Burns, Owen Moran and several fight
ers of minor note.
Navy Spies Captured.
London, Sept. 13. Recent captures
of German spies in England have con
vinced the authorities that far. more
stringent measures are neaded. A bill
has been Introduced Into the house of
commons which will provide severe
penalties for anyone attempting to
gain possession of national secrets.
The bill will be among the first to re
ceive consideration during the coming
session and it probably will be rushed
through.
