"The showing In oats Is smaller than usual.. This Is dus entirely to the de creased acreage, because the crop to the acre is a record breaker. ' . "Alfalfa is making the same heavy showing In this section ag has been noted in all portions of Oregon." , I m bier's school district war was transplated to La Grande today when a large number of taxpayers who are interested In the provosed division of the Imbter school district, came to La Grande for the purpose of placing their dispute before the county court.,! In view of the fact that the commis sioners were not present, Judge Henry postponed the hearing until August 3, the regular meeting date of the county court. ' ' Some of the Imbler people want a new high school and others want to divide the district. The strife has been under way for several weeks and It Is believed the action of the county court nent month will 8ettle It. the per centage of fall sowing Is fully age for the entire destrlct. 10 per cent more than usual. "While there are' stretches that will harvest CO bushels an acre In the vicin ity of Elgin, It is a common sight to see fields that will range between 45 and 50 bushels. Sixty-bushel yields In bygone years have oxAy been harvested in spots, but the percentage of such productions is much greater this year than ever before. Therefore taking the "harvest field for field, the average this year will be the greatect ever known in Union county. "Warm weather Is needed to ripen the wheat safely and barring hot wlnd3 or a wet harvest, the crop Is practl cally made at this time. L BUSSEY The I'nlor. county wheat crop which Is credited Ly evtrycr.e a ppsltl r,i to be a Jude to outstrip anything la history of wheat growing In this coun ty is described in detail by a special dispatch from Elgin to a Portland pa per: :'.'; ' . . "Within a very few days Union coun ty will be In the midst of Its greatest harvest. A careful examination of th? fields in all sections of the county gives indications that the yield will approximate 500,000 to 2,000.000 bush els from an acreage slightly less tha-i , that commonly sowed In small grains. That this year's crop of wheat in Vnion tounty promises a yield of vir tually 50 per cent moin than that of a year ago Is due to two conditions:' first, the greater acreage, and second, the excellent growing weather and amount of rainfall through the season. A survey of the wheat fields In the ter ritory Immediately surrounding Elgin shoTa a splendid stand of grain, and It Is predicted by flouring mill men of the valley that there will le shipped from tli't point approximately 4.".0.000 busl fls.
