OBSERVER'S FAIR WINNERS.
Happy Party Left on the Night Train
for the Rose Festival.
More than fulfilling every antlclpa
tioa of a good time, a splendid ban
quet and a delightful program the
Hot Lake sanltorium went on record
last evening as ft perfect place for
enttrtainlng. The Observer glrla from
Union county spent the day at the
Lake enjoying all the courtesies of
the institution. In the afternoon the
Wallowa county girls were taken by
.auto from La Grande to join the re
mainder of the party. Automobile
rides to Union and other pastimeA
were enjoyed until the banquet hour
which was 7 o'clock.
When the doors of the grill were or
dered opened by Mrs. Berry, chief of
the culinary department at the Lake,
the Observer party marched to the
bunquet table which was beautifully
decorated with foliage and flowers.
Appropriate music was furnished for
the occasion and the jccaslon was one
of exquisite beauty.
,. An eight course banquet was served
In the most perfect manner. Follow

Two hours were pleasantly spent at
the banquet table and Senator Pierce
delivered a good talk to the young la
dies. It was filled with good, common
sens? reasoning for the young folKS
and no doubt they will remember
many of the good things the senator
said. Mr. Brock who conducted the

telling them how weddings had fol
lowed other contests he has held and
assured the girls he ha destructions
from their "steadies" that they were
to be Introduced to no men on this
trip. J. J. Carr told of the way a
business man felt when approached
by a fair contestant asking for sub
scriptions. His narration of the ex
act feeling that disturbs the ordinary
man when besieged by a pretty girl
for votes caused general merriment.
The banquet room was left about
9:30 o'clock and from that hour until
time for the train dancing was enjoy
ed In the ball room of the Institution.
Before leaving for the train the girls
were showered with well wishes for a
pleasant trip and the evening's enter
tainmnt closed with all insisting that
the Hot Lake .management had given
the girls a most delightful start on
their trla.

Mrs. Olivei Turner on Fourth street.

the attendance was not as large1 as us
ual but a most enjoyable evening was
spent. The subject for general dis
cussion was "Should the senate ratify
the bill providing f a reciprocity
agreement between the United States
and Canada." The discussibn was en
tered into with much interest.

Week for Coast
Rev. and Mrs. S. W. Seemann expect
to leave for southern California next
Monday evening on their vacation.
They will .first visit Portland and will
then go to San Francisco to attend
the Sunday school convention, which
is to be held there. After the close of
the convention Mr. and Mrs. Seemann
will go to southern California for a
short vacation.
