Hotel Gearhart "by-the-sea," Ore
gon's most beautiful coast resort, will

of the Evening Observer's contest par
ty in June.-
Arrangements have been made
whereby , Hotel Gearhart will enter
tain four of the young ladies for two
, days. This will Include ocean-view
' sleeping rooms, meals and tickets for
the salt water natatorlum.
Gearhart's attractions and amuse
ments are many and as an all-year-round
resort is the most popular in the
Pacific northwest The trip from Port-

' scenic rides out of Oregon's metropo
lis. The trip requires three and one
half hours and the picturesque scenery
of the Columbia river is th. beautiful

The Gearhart hotel is one of the
most magnificent resorts of the kind

the hotel. At Gearhart are the best
golf links in the west, tennis courts

hotel is the park of 200 acres. Wind

When the members of the Evening
Observer contest pany reach Gearhart
they will be met at the station by a
renresentatlve of the hotel and taken
for a stage ride through the woods to
the hotel. Special accommodations
will be provided and the members of
the party will be given a tour of the
hotel and grounds. After that they will
be given the' keys of the hotel and
every amusement at this beautiful re

Astoria Centennial dates are August
10 to Sept. 9,to celebrate the first set
tlement of the northwest by the white
maq. - April 12, 1811, the Tonquin, a
trading ship owned by John Jacob As
tor, sailing into the mouth of what u
now the Columbia river, and proceed
ed up ten miles to a cove where the
crew landed, and established a camp
to facilitate trading with the Indians.
This camp became known as Astoria.
It grew from a trading expedition Bent
out from New York by John Jacob As
tor. It is to celebrate this event that
the Astoria centennial was projected.
The state of Oregon has appropriat
ed $50,000 to aid in the expense of this
celebration. Clatsop county , made a
tax levy which raised $25,000, The
merchants of Astoria raised $30,000
more. Colonel John Jacob Astor of
New York city donatd $10,000, and
other private contributions bring the
available funds up to $150,000 at this
date. The program is as follows:
