In TIndale's version of 1525. the fol
lowing from Ephesians 11. 13 ff. seems
little better than the foregoing, al
though all of two centuries lat.r.

Salem Asylum Employes Balk at Hut.

A Sal m special says: Race pre
judice has been fomenting at the Ore
gon State Insane asylum since last
Friday. It resulted In the discharge of
two attendants at the cottage farm
and In threats from 16 others that
they would resign unless certain ne
gro help was discharged and brought
out statements to the eeffct that Gov
ernor West was responsible for the
employment of the negroes who have
caused all of the trouble.
James Lynthcomb and wife, negroes
were added to the force of asylum em
ployes last Friday. When they were
taken to the main building Friday
noon and placed at, one of the tables
with the attendants who were dining.
several attendants walked out of the
room.
The negroes were then taken to the
cottage farm, a part of the Institu
tion, where the woman was placed In
the dining room .and a position In the
engine room was given the man. The
man, It Is said, was transferred later
to the position of night watchman.
When the negroes were received as
employes at the cottage farm an Im
mediate protest was heard and W. J.
Glbbs, one of the attendants, began
circulating a remonstrance, which
read:
"We, the employes of the asylum
farm, consider It an Imposition and
disgrace to have colored people occu
pying the positions that they do and
we object most strenuously.
This was signed by 19 of the at
tendants, according to Gibbs. who
headed the remonstrance.
This remonstrance was forwarde.lt o
the asylum officials and as a result.
