We often hear people say: "Provi dence has been very kind to this val ley, and to the city of La Grande." That Is all very true, indeed, but did It ever occur to you that we are over working the Almighty just a little. We are not doing anything for our selves, comparatively speaking. We are not letting . the outside world know what we have. How many people on the coast know that La Grande has the only beet sugar factory in Oregon? - How many people know tnat tue Palmer Lumber company has the best equipped mill in the northwest? How many people outside of the city limits know the enormous pay roll La Grande has? How many people know that on Oc tober 22nd there Is to s a govern ment land opening In Wallowa coun ty that will enable 1500 people to secure homes? How many, people realize there are 300,000 acres of land under cultiva tion in the Grande Ronde valley? Why are these facts not known? . Here Is the reason: Kind Provi dence has done a great de;i for this city and valley. ( He has made it possible for people to make money without great effort. He has provid ed fruits, grain, timber and live stock in abundance. He has given a climate that is healthful, plenty of W. L. BREXH0LTS, Ass't Cash. EARL ZUNDEL, d Ass't Cash. Really, don't you think it would be a square deal to act as If we were able to help ourselves for once, and all' Umber up a little bit and take a hand in, doing something for the Grande Ronde valley and La Grande? Large capital is invested here, but It cannot do all. There needs be a firm stand for advancement by the people. Forget the little petty Jealousies. Who cares whether the neighbor's chick ens scratch up your garden; , who cares whether some one's cow ate up the top of your tree. Be broad. Quit this petty thinking and realize there is a big, wide world and that La Grande can be one of the very im portant points in that world. John J. Ingalls said opportunity knocks but once. He is wrong. Op portunity is hammering at , La Grande's front door, her back door, rattling her windows, and crying to be embraced.
