' 'The property is only sis m'tei from Joseph, and has one per ten' grade the entire distance with th .exception of two miles where it will be necessary to build a tramway If the ore is handled in the easiest man ner and with the least resistance. , According to the copper specimen displayed by Mr. Eisenbers there is little doubt but that those ' owning Lead Mountain have a paying propo sition. The ore Is very rich and car ries some gold and silver. Splendid water power Is obtainable close by and from the description given v erythlng that could make a mine is near at hand. Wallowa county Is very well thought of in mining ' circles, and many well balanced w mining men think the next , mineral excitement will be in the region around Joseph. Such ore as that shown at the Fo ley hotel last evening will surely have a tendency to create an excite ment no matter where located. BAN OVEB BT TBAIN. Accident at Umatilla is Fatal To Young Mam- William George Hesse, aged 24 years, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hesse of Rosallla, Washington, died at St. Anthony's hospital about 4 o'clock this morning as the result of being run over by a passenger train at Umatilla yesterday morning relates the Pendleton E. 0. Hesse was a laborer and was beating his way f rm Arlington to Pendleton, where he expected to go to work. He was stealing a ride into Umatilla on a blind baggage when the acci dent happened which coBt him his life. It seemed that he started to swing i off the train Just as it pulled Into I the station, or he was getting ready to do so when he was struck .by the coal chute which comes close to the track. Though knocked nearly sense less he hung on for 25 or 30 yards, but was finally forced to let go and be fell .with his lower limbs under the wheels. The left leg was severed diagon ally near the hip while the right foot was cut off above the ankle. Hgenc on Weighty Questions A large crowd attended the regu lar meeting of the Blue Mountain Grange Saturday, April 16. How to enforce the weed law and frutt laws in regard to the spraying were discussed and 'Will be brought up at the next Pomona Grange meeting hi the hope of in stituting a campaign against these two unenforced laws,' aB . it Is Im possible for the law abiding citizen to keep their orchards or fields In condition while others pay no atten tion to such questions. An inter esting literary and musical program was also furnished. The Union County Pomona Grange will hold its regular meeting with Blverslde Grange on April 23 at 10 a. m. Riverside Grange will furnish a literary program and "banquet. Among other questions to be discus sed will the the denatured alcohol distillery, good roads, bank guaran tee and Postal Savings Banks and the new state constitutional amend ments. This will he a very busy day and a large number of Grangers will be present. BAKER LOSES OPEMJiG GAME First of Baseball Season Go To the Cote - An interested crowd watched the first ball game of the season at the Valley avenue grounds yesterday af ternoon when Cove's veteran tossers hooked up with the local lights for nine good innings, says the Baker Herald. The visitors carried off the laurels by a score of 8-6. Cove caught the lead with a score of three , in the first inning but the home guard overtook their rivals ear ly and went ahead with , five runs. That, however, was the - most they could do and when the Grande Ronde J boys came strong at the finish, tie-1 Ing it up in the eighth and putting three more over In the last session, it was taps for the local colors, Clarence Palmer was in the box for Baker and twirled a nice game until the last inning when he suf fered a misfortune by being hit in the pitching arm. This lamed the little twirler so badly that he was unable to hold the visiting sluggers to the finish.
