the present. Mr. Zimmerle has as
sociated with him several capitalists

company. , They . purchased the old
Mitchell ranch, three miles from Cove

the transformation, they have done
considerable work toward making the
tract a rival of the famous Hood Elv
er apple lands. . . j
"I never worked so hard in all my
life," said Mr. Zimmerle at the Som
mer hotel last evening to a reporter
for the Observer. "You se,e," he con
. tlnued, "we had confidence in the
Grande Ronde valley as a fruit sec
tion, and that confidence Js increas
ing daily. By purchasing this : 200
acres and planting it to frlut we are
laying the foundation for a fortune
and no mistake.' This valley Is bound j
to make many menvrich by its fruit
lands, and we wanted to get in on
the ground floor. My associates in
Seattle are .pleased with the outlook
and they will be more than pleased
when ; they come(: down and take a
look at the physical . appearance of
the ( property after I have put in a
few months more. But, really, dont't
you know that this apple orchard
work Is a flesh reducer. I used to
be as fat as George Good, and look
at me now." V
With that remark Mr. Zimmerle
stood up like a soldier and sure
enough, the way his clothes hung
would indicate that at some time not
far back he, was a larger man than
he is today.';; This loss of flesh,. how
ever Is offset by, the ruddy glow of
youth 'which the wind of the Grande
Ronde has brought "hack to his coun
tenance and he Is perfectly happy.

originally and has been a prominent

buildings and although he is not an
old man his work has been adopted
and used In the construction of more
than 20 school houses In Minnesota

lime business at Pleasant Valley, was
in the city yesterday on his way to
'.Vallowa county where he has under
consideration A several locations for
lime kilns. ' The Colonel adheres to
the opinion that the development of
Wallowa county will cause a heavy
demand ior lime and he desires to
tt one or the first in the field of
manufacture of the product.

While on his way to Hot Lake to
spend a few days for the benefit of
his throat Rev. C. E. Cllne stopped off
In La Grande yesterday and visited
a number of his friends. Rev. Cllne
la one of the staunch Methodist-Republicans
of Oregon. His record In
the civil war is of the best and he
has never quit fighting In a political
way." In speaking of the assembly
the reverend pronounced himself un
qualifiedly in favor of it and he says
It Is one of his strongest wishes that
the . republican party of Oregon may
have a general overhauling In the
near future. .
