From this hcuBe old John Glenann secretly departs, leaving the Impression that he is dead that he may better learn what sort of men are Pickering, the -executor of his estate and John Glenarm nls grandson and possible )elr, and if ten thing be possible to bring about a marriage tetween the young man and Marlon Devereux the al ternate heir. He confides his plan to Bates, the butler, the serving man who Is "too good a servant to be one" and pledges Bates to secrecy. Things might have gone smoothly enough had it not been that old , Glenarm left behind him a strange and unusual will with clauses and provisions . therein as whlM.t..t . m - - A --. Pickering's hireling sheriff and Pickering' hireling1 assasin, Morgan, and with his friends Donovan and the Rev. Mr. Stoddard, and Bates, barricades the doors and prepares for a se!ge. Into the midst of these beligerent preparations comes Mar lon, through a secret corrider, to warn Clenarm of his peril. Picker ing suspects her mlsilon and follows, and unluckily for him brings up short in the enemies camp. Morgan and the sheriff attack with a mob and a wild bullet thudding against a panel betrays by Its sound the hiding place of old Glenarm's treasure. Glenarm and his friends make a hasty exam ination and they find that Pickering has borrowed $33,000 from the sen ior Pickering and gives his notes therefor., These are due and Plcker- !nr pnnnt hnr- hla tanral efforts to gain possession of them. :- While the battle is at its height, old Glenarm himself appears as if from the grave, brought to the scene by a dispatch from Bates and guided by Marion to the library where the conflict rages, through a secret pas sage. The surprise Is complete and the effect of besieged and besiegers alike Is astounding. The attack comes to an end. Pickering and Mor gan are made prisoners and, in the explanation that follows It develops that Bates Is not Bates, but a man by the name of Creighton who, to shield the father of Marlon from the penal ty of forgery, assumed the crime himself and fled to America and ans- LILLIAN DWIL.B. wering an advertisement, found him self In the employ of the eccentric architect of the "Houeo of the Thous and .Candles," and witLln a Btones throw of the school " where Marlon herself resides.
