Put all of your portable prop erty under lock and key. Double bar your out buildings, if you happen to have any. Put chains on 'your gates. Lock all doors securely.' Then hire a ,ijuad of private cops, armed with shot guns, to sit up all night and guard your property.. Having done all this and take all other little precautions that you may deem necessary, you may retire to si umber and peaceful dreams, contldent that all of your be longings are safe. Saturday night Is Hallowe'en when ghoHts, witches, hobgoblins, and other assorted hunts return to earth and play Btrange pranks. Aa the festival falls on Sunday this year, and as many specters are are strict observers of the Sabbath, It may be confidently expect ed that the vlstit-atlon will begin to night In any event It wisest to pre pare ofr the emergency, least some able bodied ghost or husky hobgoblin happen along and carry off everything that is left loose. Preparations have been made for a number of ghost nnd soot parties and from 8 o'clock until midnight the resident section of the city will be filled with white fluttering figures. For four hours the young people will give their time and Ingenuity to all sorts of pranks and pleasures. Owing to the Impossibility of keeping a sepa rate day for each saint, the Roman Catholc church, centuries ago, set Social life in La Grande is becom ing strenuous. More nights In the week will soon become an absolufe necessity, and occasionally there Is a shortage of afternoons. ' Farmers generally would hall : a good soaking rain with delight JThe ground in many places is too dry to plow. Earlier in the season consider able fall grain was sown. While very little Is being said about It, a tour of the city will demonstrate that considerable building Is now un der way. A number of new residences are being constructed. The permanency of our city is re flected in the prices obtained for Ad ams avenue property. $6,000 per lot was a vision a few years ago, now an actual reality. i?i . ', When the eastern portion of Adums avenue is macadamized, that Is go ing to be one of the 'most desirable residence sections of the city. ; Over From linker City George n. Small, one of the owners of the Maker City Democrat, was in the city this afternon, having made the run from Maker to La Grande In an automobile, with Judge Henry and other frlenrs. The party reached this city only a few moments ahead of the heavy rain storm which visited this section this afternoon. George is the same light hearted, joyous chap that ho always is, which accounts for the glad welcome that his friends always have for him.
