Mrs. Johnson ot Walla Wala, return ed to her home this morning after having been a guest with Mrs. J. H. Watson. Mr. Parker of Yakima. Wash.. Is in the city today as a guest with Mr. Walker. He Is looking over the val ley with a view to locating. Sam Brooks one of the prominent ranchers of this city; left last even ing f roSalem, to attend the fair. This is his third successive year at the Salem attraction. H. W. R- Smith of Union, passed through the city today en route to Wala Walla to exhibit some blooded animals which he owns. Whie there he will meet his wife, whl Is returning from Seattle. In a letter received by Court Re porter Hanna, it Is stated that Jndge and Mrs. J. , W.' Knowles and family will return to La Grande tomorrow af ter an extended tour of the southern country. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Nibely Jr., and family, returned this morning from Logan, Utah. Mrs. Nlbley was spend ing a short time with friends there, and during that time her father, Aaron Thatcher, aged 72, was taken 111 and died. His death followed two weeks in the wake of Mrs. NIbley's uncle's death. ' Reverend and, Mrs. Samuel T. Haw kins of Alpha, Idaho, have arrived in North Powder, to succeed Reverend C. D. Fawcett in the pastorate of the Methodist Episcopal church at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Neldner left last evening for Heppner. where the receiver will conduct a hearing In the Asa B. Thomson case, and then proceed to Portland and Seattle and possibly San Francisco. If they go to the Bay city they will take the boat from Seattle. Mrs. A. Buckley returned this morning from a visit to St Paul and Minneapolis. She was accompanied home by Miss Ruth Buckley, daugh ter of Superintendent M. J. Buck ley of Portlan d.and Miss Thompson, also of Portland. L. D. Tookey ot Mexico City, Mexi co, Is i nthe city.
