morrow is election day In Idaho, and
the bitter local option war will come
to a climax. Both sides are confident,

"So far as the public sentiment of

BRROKLYN, Sept. 7. Secretary
Brldgman, of the Peary Arctic club,
nas received tne following message
from Peary: "Kindly rush the follow
ing: Wire all the principal home and
foreign geographical societies of all
nations including Japan and Brazil,
that the North Pole was reached on
April 6, 1909, by Peary s Arctic club
expedition, under Commander Peary."
This message was forwarded to the
officials at Washington.

rlman, was revived today following
last nights officials announcement that
the patient suffered a sharp relapse.
Dr. Lyle, Harriman's personal phy
sician, issued the following bulletin:
"Harriman is a sick man, but we hope
for the best"

HOQUIAM, Sept. 7. Following
submission of demands by representa
tives of 2,500 shingle weavers for in
creasedwages, the Poison Shingle
company mills and East Hoquiam
company mills are closed today, in
definitely. Similar action by other
mill owners are expected.
It is probable some.of the mills wLH
remain open and clean up the timber
on band, and then close until the
strike conditions are ended. Action
of the mill men followed a six hour
session yesterday by the local Shingle
Weavers' union.
Workmen decided to submit their
demands for an Increase in wages
this morning, and if refused they
wottld strike. Their action affects 32
mills employing 2500 men.
Chehalis is the only county involved,
bttt it is possible that the strike mas
spread along the coast. A mimbej
of mills of thes Manufacturers asso
ciation are standing by the associa
tion in order to support the "Open
Shop" policy. Mill owners say they
will be ruined if they submit to the
demands.

mer was opened here, today by the
South Side Kennel club.

praisement made by him under the
new law on the timber and stone en
tries In this land office district. Under
the new ruling all timber and stone
claims must be visited by a govern
ment appraiser and the value of the
land ascertained. After the appraiser
has completed his work in finding the
value of the land and timber on the
land and reported to the land office,
the applicant can either reject or pay

ert S. Bean of Oregon, has dismissed
the civil suit brought by the govern
ment against the Barber Lumber com
pany, to collect entry on 40,000 acres

BERKELEY, Calif., Sept. 7. Peary's
message in which he stated he had
nailed the stars and stripes . to the
North Pole, and Cook's entry into
Copenhagen, has the saver of "Buffalo

ing to a quoted statement of Professor
Geo. Davidson, authority on geograph
ic and astronomic affairs. Davidson
declared hia' belief that both Peary
and Cook reached the pole, for the
reason that he could not imagine a
sane man foolish enough to make the
claim without proof.
He said:: "Much of the glory of hav
ing accomplished the feat of reaching
the. pole has, been dimmed I think, by
the actions of the explorers them
selves to say nothing of their respec
tive friends. The Buffalo Bill-like

that if he attired himself like an ,
American citizen, dressed and shaved

has swept the valley of Soto Lamarina
river, which enters the Gulf of Mexico
150 miles north of here, according to
