' &4&S&$&$44&44M444 TO GET mm EXHIBITS New Policy Adopted by Fair Promoters That has Been Found Successful Elsewhere Something that has never been un dertaken before, on so broad a scope at least, will be commenced next Monday or Tuesday, when a commit tee headed by W. J. Church will com mence a houseto-housa canvass throughout the valley to, get exhibits for the fair. This committee will go to the rancher an.d secure, his hones' promise that some sort of exhibit will be made, and if la the purpose of the committee to cover Just as large n territory as' possible before the time for placing them on exhibit boards Such a policy has been carried out in Pendleton with good results. Fair promoters there claim there is only one way to get exhibits in to a fat. and that is to go out and get them from the farmers. Profiting by the experience of oth ers in this line the local promoters have adopted the same plan and the work starts Monday. It can. have but one conclusion and that la. greatly in creased quantitiies and better qual ity of exhibits of all kinds. iDRiLUNGj There are several kinds trt -drilling, but the kind the kind that makes the farm pay is the drilling which makes water avail- J able. There is no need " .of a dry farm. The task is not so great as you may think, I have had years of experience and understand the well busi ness thoroughly. a ID.M. HUNT : e LA 3BANDE. The agitation for a club team is concerted and many who last year failed to don the togs, are expressing themselves as pelng agree able to a splendid team this year. If the team is organized at all, It will be with plans to play more games' than were, last year scheduled as the team was not organized until Just prior to the Christmas game. The gladiators and near has beens argue that by prompt organization, the team ;-an acquire much more proficiency than the average club team, and con sequently take on larger and more formidable aggregations. Those who are talking the matter prefer to play Cove and Elgin and perhaps the local high school, team early in the season and the windup with Pendleton again, which last year came here under amicable circum stances and which later entertained the La Grande team. Among those who would be avail able this year for such a team are men who have been stars on former teams and have often been seen in action here. Last year's captain, Rey nolds, would probably play later in the season; Arlo Bay, Frank, Hawley, Harris French, Childers, Drlscoll, Grandy, Grout, Caylor, Bolton ana a I large number of other candidates would form the nucleus of a strong team. With Coach Wall still here, It would be an easy matter to secure the best of coaching, and with other men who are new to this city willing to play indications are extremely bright ' "Poe" Caylor, the old time quarter back is thinking of returning and If he does, he will be a strong adjunct to the team if it Is formed. If pres ent indications count for anything, there will be more than one good team in La Grande this year. Lovers of the amusement of filling the eyes, ears and nose of the passer bys with confetti at the Union County Exposition, are to be compelled to dispense with their favorite pastime, except at certain times during the session of the exposition. This is the conclusion reached last night by the Board of Managers of the Union Coun ty Exposition. At night when there Is no other number on the program taking place and all is quiet along the Pike, one may throw confetti to their hearts content for a short time. It was also decided that the price of admission to the fair would be 10 and 15 cents. The boys of the O. A. C. asked the board to bring one of the faculty of that college here as Judge during the exposition. A committee was named to look into the matter. The board will ask the city council for the right of granting all conces sions In the city during the exposi tion week. The sale of confetti is to be retained by the committee. Geo. H. Hlmes of the State Histori cal society is to be here on ploueer day and deliver a lecture. The Union Band. Herman Perregaux. Pine Valley is now leading the Union band and Is an instructor of more than ordinary ability. Mr. Perragaux expects to Boon have the Union band on a bet ter basis than ever. The band will give a concert soon and a marked Improvement may be expected among the players. Union Republican. DO YOU KNOW : FOR CERTAIN? Biff Land Sale. Wm. Hutchinson and G. F.
